Boys will be boys!!

Posted in: PATA
My daughter tells me that at the North High School yesterday there was a fight between two boys in the restroom. The school sent home a letter saying it was only an altercation between these two boys.

I understand that one of the boys had brought beer to school and broke the bottle off and used that bottle as a weapon. In the restroom he attacked another boy with the bottle and cut the boys face. The victim reported it to a teacher but his pleas when unheard. During the fight the aggressor cut his own hand and then proceeded to wipe his blood on the lockers going down the hall.

I guess as a parent are there any controls by the faculty for keeping beer out of the High School during the regular work day when classes are going on? Clearly alcohol and teenage boys don't mix and we saw the result of that yesterday. Was this kid just drunk or high on something else?

Do we have a discipline problem at the North High School?

I will be calling the school tomorrow I would like any feedback from other parents.
It's true

From what my kids said, it happened during one of the lunch periods and the intended victim had gone to a teacher before he was attacked. I think the attacker cut himself worse than the victim.

Attack at High School

And the attacker will only get a hand slapping instead of being charged with attempted assault and battery ... these kids need to know that they should be held accountable for their actions.

And if the victim did seek help from a teacher and/or administrator and nothing was done, they should be reprimanded/disciplined in someway. The teacher is there to look out for the kids while they are in the building and any threat should be looked into not swept under the table.

React to reports

I guess the question is how does a high school student regularly bring beer to school and not get caught? According to my daughter this kid was been regularly drinking at school for some time now.

With the hormones ragging in these teen years and the immortal feeling teenagers have then to mix that with alcohol is beyond me. Clearly a teacher would have smelt his breathe if he was anywhere near them. If I have one beer with my pizza my wife knows when I get home and sometimes she is across the room.

My point; is the school administration just ignoring this behavior? When someone breaks the end of a beer bottle off while in school and uses that as a weapon that is a serious problem and we should all be concerned. Please compare the size of a six pack to that of a gun. If we have students with that much anger and who seems to be out of control with his actions we have a much larger problem.

I know the administration wants to play these kind of incidents down but is that what we should be doing here and allowing this student and his parents off the hook? The question then is how many other incidents like this are happening and are they happening only at the North High School? I suspect that we are having problems in others schools as well.

I have heard rumors for years about different students getting drunk and then getting caught by the police and being let off. Some were on teams and their parents had influence over the police.

I think it is time Pickerington faces up to a problem that has been here for a long time. That beer bottle is a deadly weapon it isn't a toy gun like so many zero tolerance schools will expel students for. It is a real weapon and it can kill you. Fortunately in this case the attacker was either too drunk or too unskilled and the victim got away with only a minor injury.

I am not calling for a zero tolerance policy that gets stupid because some administrator lacks the common sense to carry out those kinds of policies. I am calling for teachers that will report alcohol on a student's breathe and call the kid in. I am calling for teachers that when they are confronted with a report of a threat (like in this case) they react.

I hesitate to bring up that Colorado High School and how their problems started by ignoring these threats and the students not reporting them. If a student does report a possible attack and the teacher ignores the report then why should the students even bother in the future?
