Information from Independent Disposal Services

Yard Waste Disposal Options for Independent Disposal Service customers in New Castle County, Delaware north of the C&D canal

Yard Waste includes grass, leaves, garden material, shrubs, brush, tree limbs up to 4 inches in diameter and 5 feet long and Christmas trees. Yard waste cannot be mixed with normal household trash after January 1, 2007.

1. COMPOST OR MULCH YOUR YARD WASTE by using a mulching mower, brush chippers, and/or composting. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control has many tips; www.dnrec.delaware.gov/yardwaste.

2. TAKE YOUR YARD WASTE TO A COMPOSTING/MULCHING FACILITY.
DSWA Composting/Mulching, 12th St & Hay Rd, Wilmington, (800) 404-7080 for $61.50/ton.

3. CONTACT A LAWN OR LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE SERVICE COMPANY.

4. JOIN THE DSWA CURBSIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM, www.delawarerecycles.com or (800) 404-7080. For $9.00 per month the DSWA will pick up your recyclables and up to 4 bags of yard waste each week. They can take additional bags of yard waste for $1.00 per bag. This is the most cost effective option for curbside pickup. Independent Disposal will give a credit of $4.00 per month on your trash bill if you participate in this program. This reduces your cost for pick up of recyclables and pick up of yard waste to only $5.00 per month.

5. CALL INDEPENDENT DISPOSAL FOR YARD WASTE REMOVAL SERVICE,
(302) 378-5400 or www.independentdisposal.com. Independent Disposal Service offers weekly pickup for up to 5 thirty gallon-size bags/bundles for a fee. IDS will have a one time pickup service for up to 20 thirty gallon-size bags/bundles for a fee for those customers who do not need weekly service. Please call for pricing.
CHRISTMAS TREES with no decorations can be taken to the following Delaware State Parks for free disposal as part of DNRECs Christmas Tree Recycling Program; Bellevue, Brandywine Creek, Lums Pond, White Clay Creek, Killens Pond, Cape Henlopen and Trap Pond. Check www.dnrec.delaware.gov for dates and times.

Yard Waste makes up nearly a quarter of the residential waste in Delaware. By diverting this estimated 45,000 tons a year from Cherry Island landfill we can delay the need to find a new landfill site in New Castle County.
