This is just my opinion. I saw in the Journal the other day about the pay wages for the sheriff. That is just ridiculous!! $72000... for what? I have never once seen the sheriff out in a county car or even doing anything. I have never heard the sheriff on the scanner or out helping his deputies. I understand the sheriff has ''office duties'' but come on. The deputies are the ones out there doing all the work, the deputies are the ones breaking up fights, going to accidents, patrolling our streets. Why not, instead of giving the sheriff another raise for doing nothing, decrease his pay and increase the deputies pays. Just so everyone knows, I AM NOT related to any deputy, sheriff, or county worker. I am just merely stating my opinion. So anyone who dont agree with me, I am sorry, but I cant help what I feel.
And another thing... What is with spending $12000 on new shotguns? Are they shopping local like they always encourage us to do? I see Wal Mart has a lot of shotguns at a very reasonable price.
Again....Just my opinion. Thank you for listening to me vent. :)

Contrary to what winger says

The Deputies do little to no work, much like the Sheriff. That's why they never publish statistics, because the statistics would show that they do little or no work except for riding around wasting gas. Check the national and state websites, nothing happens in Muscatine County to justify the number of Deputies or the amount of their budget. The Superivsors just keep funding this hole in the ground.

You're WAY off

Reality has escaped you, when you feel it unfair for the management to earn more than the workforce.
Where is this not the case?
If you are part of a labor pool which earns more than the bosses - tell me where you work, 'cuz I want in!
The fact is, just by virtue of the fact that we DON'T hear much about him or his office indicates to me that not only is he doing an exemplary job, but the department he oversees is also.
And quite frankly, I doubt you'd find many sheriffs in a county the size of Muscatine making much less - though I will assure you can find many being paid much, much more.
I will also mention, that while not directly part of his ''official'' duties, our sheriff is actively involved in our community and devotes much of his non-office hours to enriching the lives of our youth.
You can think what you like about salaries, and what our sheriff is doing or not doing - but until you walk a mile in his shoes or have taken the time to get to know him or his department, your comments should be regarded simply as a knee-jerk reaction to the salary postings that come out in the Journal annually.
While it is public information, I've never really understood the benefits of having anyone's salary published in the local paper - there are zero positive results. I'm guessing our teachers, City Employees and MPW peeps would all agree.
Echo of sentiments

to A citizen's post. Very well put.

The sheriff is more than just a figure head for the County seat. The sheriff serves in many capacities that go unnoticed and unreported. The sheriff meets and interfaces with State and Federal authorities among other things. Why would you hear the sheriff on the scanner? This isn't Mayberry!

Our sheriff, like him or not, has administrative duties he attends to as well as reporting requirements set forth by the Board of Supervisors, municipalities, State, and Federal regulations.

Here again all the complaining is being done yet no one wants to get off their duff and make a change. If you don't like what you see, read or hear, now is the time to start campaigning to make a change. As to the shotguns, who knows? How accurate do you know those figures to be?
