The Chief is

required by the city to have a batchelors degree and the Iowa law does not require one. Other than that what qualifications are missing? The Sheriff still is responsible for a big operation.

salaries should be private

Salaries should be private and reviewed by dept heads or at hearing etc.The reason Sheriff and others are quiet is I believe because they do a great job and fill their staff with qualified people,they also are there to help people who need something out of the normal or correct items that need their dept attention.Generally our town has been blessed with qualified and caring employees

Actually

The Chief has a Graduate Degree, the Sheriff...a high school diploma, just as the person who hopes to replace him.

what I meant....

was that many here are questioning and most of us have no idea what they are responsible for, nor what their day-to-day job is like. I know I don't.
