WELCOME TO WAKEFIELD

WHO ARE WE?
Wakefield Taxpayers and Civic League, Inc. was formed in 1913 to maintain the integrity of the community. It is one of the oldest community organizations in the city. It was incorporated in 1931 and has been serving the community since then.

WHAT DO WE DO?

  • We do all sorts of things to benefit the community. We list some of our many accomplishments:
  • We got the outer walls of PS 16 repaired at a time when repairs were simply not being made. We took on the Board of Ed and got it done.
  • We got the retaining wall repaired when the playground on Matilda Avenue was in danger of falling into the school yard on Carpenter Avenue. This entailed a $250,000 contract that the bureaucracy lost. We found it!
  • There is a newsstand on southeast corner of White Plains Rd. and E. 233rd Street. Another was built on the northeast corner. We had it removed. “They” said it could not be done. We did it.
  • We contributed to shutting down topless bars and adult entertainment in the community.
  • We initiated the study which changed zoning regulations for motels in residential areas.
  • We fought for 10 years to shut down the outdated, drug and prostitution infested OTB parlor at 646 E. 241st Street and have it moved to 814 E. 241st Street.
  • We demand our fair share of police. We monitor crime statistics to see how Wakefield is affected. We interact with the 47 Precinct.
  • We are responsible for the Senior Housing on Cranford Avenue. When a slick provider tried to foist an AIDS rehabilitation center instead of of senior housing, we stopped the provider in its tracks.
  • We are at the forefront of stemming the influx of Group homes in the community. We monitor the group homes Wakefield does have.
  • We fight against illegal constructions and illegal rental units in one, two and three family homes.
  • We initiated the movement to down zone Wakefield working closely with City Planning and CB 12 to halt overdevelopment.
  • We work closely with the District Attorney’s Crime Assistance Unit.
  • We are involved with the Business Outreach Center to foster a better business environment on White Plains Road.
  • We work with Block organizations and assist in forming them.

WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Wakefield is a beautiful community because we care and we fight to keep it so.
Come, work with us and receive the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to the stability of the community.

WAKEFIELD CIVILIAN PATROL

The Patrol began in 1976. It merged with the League in 1988. Its record of crime resistance is remarkable. It has stopped crime in progress. It has alerted the Fire Dept. on a number of occasions. The Patrol has saved lives by bringing medical assistance to those involved in accidents and other emergencies.

Volunteers patrol one night a week, or one night every other week, depending on their schedule.

Learn more about the Patrol and how to join by reading our WCP brochure or call 718-324-8564.

THE SAFE WAY/SAFE HOME PROGRAM

In 1984 to meet the crisis in rising violence against children, not only by adults but by their peers, the League submitted to the New York Police Department, the award winning program SWSH.

As a result of the League’s work, the official NYS child safety symbol is the McGruff dog.
