Is it bad that there are some good teachers, some mediocre teachers and some bad teachers? If so, I challenge you to identify one entity in the universe that does not uphold this distribution of properties. |

But...
I think that the issue is that the teachers have historically had very rich contracts negotiated by their strong union with the reviously weak schoolboard. In these tough economic times, it seems appropriate that the new contract that comes to be has considerable more real-world finances baked into it. Put in realistic co-pays, cost sharing, inflationary raises, etc. The teachers have a pretty good life... 9 month work year, 2 weeks paid at Christmas, a week paid in the spring, misc. days throughout the year, PLUS they get personal days, cheap insurance, guaranteed raises, job security, not alot of overtime. I don't advocate anything other than making them join the real economic world. |
