Never ever ..
...question a teacher - they're always right! The quality of our school system is a testament to good parents! Yes we have good teachers and I don't mind paying for them. However I DO have a problem with them paying near nothing for health insurance premiums, co-pays and prescription drugs when insurance is one of the largest expenses facing our school district. http://www.uta.edu/depken/book/cando.html ''Gresham's Law also applies to teaching. When it is impossible to determine teaching quality, and more so it is difficult to reward those teachers who are proven to be good (mainly because of union regulations), Gresham's Law will take over. The good teachers will move to those jobs in which their outputs are easier to measure and reward, and only the bad teachers will be left in the profession. How long does it take for Gresham's Law to completely drive the good teachers out of the education system, save those who remain because of preference? This is an unanswerable question in the theoretical world, it is purely an empirical question. However, one may guess by the current state of our education system that the process is well underway and may be complete. Therefore, in the end this clich?© is most definitely in line with economic theory. Those who can, do - that is they choose jobs in which their higher marginal productivity is easily recognized and is relatively highly rewarded on the marign. On the other hand, those who can't, teach - Gresham's Law applies in the end and all good teachers are driven from the education market. Those who are completely unproductive in other applications teach because it offers them the highest rate of return on their efforts. There is perhaps no more vexing a problem for society. Just as a monetary system that becomes unstable because of Gresham's Law can not survive in the long-run, an economy can not survive in the long-run when its laor supply is constantly under-trained and under-educated by low quality teachers. This is especially true when the good teachers are continually replaced by bad teachers because of Gresham's Law.'' |
