There are 5 reasons that the Board can reduce the number of certified positions:

A. A decreased enrollment of pupils or a change in enrollment of pupils in a program at the secondary level.
B. A return of unit members from leaves of absence.
C. The suspension of school.
D. Territorial changes affecting the district.
E. Financial reasons

A reduction in force may save money but it also means bigger class sizes - the students don't win in that scenario either. We need the Board to control insurance and change the increases & steps to bring them into reality.

Even if they do that - they still have to get the teachers to agree. My guess is they get a one year contract and the teachers hope for more next year.

Price of Ignorance

I have seen many postings about salaries and benefits comprising 85% of the school budget, people not getting raises for 30 months because of the economy, the salary comparisons of teachers in other school districts, etc. So we know about the price of education in the PLSD - what is the price of ignorance?

If you are concerned about the economy, I suggest voting Bush out of office. Let's also take a look at the underfunded No Child Left Behind Act. Don't take it out on the teachers who are educating our children.

Ignorance

The price of ignorance is a $70 million dollar boondoggle. The price of ignorance is the public voting for every over priced levy 'for the kids'. The price of ignorance is not knowing where your property taxes are being spent. The price of ignorance is having individuals around thinking Bush is to blame for our current economic condition.

Sometimes you can't put a price tag on ignorance.

Nobody is taking it out on the teachers. But when times are tough all need to contribute to the solution. The board's typical response to belt tightening is to cut student related programs first and administrative/faculty programs last. The generous compensation packages are obviously a majority of the budget and cannot be ignored.
