Union
I need a union like I need another hole in my head.
I'd rather be judged on the merits of my own performance than given some arbitrary % based on what someone else negotiated for me.
Unions are the biggest reason our state govt is in shambles. Can't get rid of bad employees outside of an act of the Almighty. No reason to perform. Can't get fired, raises are guaranteed so why do any actual work?

Don't hold your breath
You'll see the teacher's union help out the school district only when it benefits them. Never before. My health insurance has gone up 35% in the past three years, my dental 30%, the co-pays doubled and the deductible is up 40%. Yet we'll never hear from the board before the contract is signed about any figures, costs or options. It will be covered ''in executive session due to personnel issues''.
Given that the great majority of our ongoing expenses are compensation related this is one area where costs can be held down. Does the board have the guts to challenge union? I doubt it. They'll roll over and issue a press release about how great a 3% annual compound contract is and hope we don't do the math when the step raises, etc are figured in. And for a nine month work year to boot.

Unless I'm a public sector employee that seems to be a choice most folks stay as far from as they can.

Touching the Future
It's interesting that residents in the area want the best but are unwilling to pay for it. It almost smacks of a sense of entitlement.
The education of our children is an investment in the future. It's the most important legacy we can pass on. The status of our school system is a testament to the quality of our teachers.
Certainly the PLSD teachers are smarter than the authors of many of the comments I have seen in this discussion.
