SEEKING NEW MEMBERS
To receive the NPM 2006 Coalition Member Newsletter in the future and
be included in the NPM 'count,' all Citizen Corps Councils at the state
and local levels NEED to register as NPM Coalition Members. As a
Coalition Member, you will receive a comprehensive toolkit, complete with
information on how to plan for National Preparedness Month in your area.
It includes suggested activities, useful preparedness information, web
banner ads, as well as instructions on using the NPM calendar and
downloading Citizen Corps brochures and logos.

To register as a NPM Coalition Member, please go to www.ready.gov,
click on the NPM banner, and then click on "Participate in National
Preparedness Month ?– Organizations."

NPM IN THE NEWS
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will be issuing a news release
next week announcing National Preparedness Month 2006. The release,
which features a quote from Under Secretary for Preparedness George
Foresman, highlights the importance of this year?’s effort and lists
participating national organizations. We will include a copy of the news
release in our next update.

NPM 2006 CALENDAR
Last year, we more than doubled the number of National Preparedness
Month events from the previous year! Many of you have already submitted
events to the NPM Calendar and we encourage all of you to begin or
continue posting your events. To do so, please go to the Citizen Corps web
site at www.citizencorps.gov and click on the link "register a new
event." Simply fill out the information in the fields as completely as
possible and submit your event for approval! You will find more information
about using the calendar in the tool kit that you receive as a Coalition
Member. Remember, the best way to help others plan for NPM events in
their own communities, is to share the activities you have planned!

NPM SPOTLIGHT: RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP DAY
The American Kennel Club (AKC) invites all organizations to hold a
community event that publicly promotes responsible dog ownership during the
month of September. The AKC will be holding flagship events in New York
City and Raleigh, NC, which will highlight the AKC programs and
services that support responsible dog ownership and publicize to news media
and the dog loving community that events are being held across the
country by organizations such as yours.

Last year, more than 350 clubs and organizations hosted events reaching
millions of dog lovers and potential pet owners through extensive media
coverage. To join the effort this year, visit
http://www.akc.org/clubs/rdod/index..cfm, create an Event Account, and
post an event. Those who confirm the details of their event by August
1, 2006 will receive a resource-filled packet including posters,
balloons, brochures, sample press releases and other materials to assist you
in ensuring your event?’s success.

For more information, visit the American Kennel Club (AKC) web site
atwww.akc.org and click on ?‘Responsible Dog Ownership Day.?’ This will
lead you to a wealth of resources, including: an overview on hosting an
event, details about the flagship events, press releases, downloadable
materials, planned events in your area, and past events. The AKC web
site also links to disaster preparedness information, including
Ready.gov?’s Ready Pets information, found at
http://www.akc.org/news/disaster_preparedness/

This is a great way for State and Local Councils to get involved.
Remember, preparedness should encompass ALL areas of the community,
including our four-legged friends!

EVENT REMINDER: NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Don?’t forget to register for National Night Out! It takes place on
Tuesday August 1, 2006 and would be an excellent opportunity to highlight
the importance of preparedness in your own communities. Once you are
registered, you will receive an organizational kit with how-to materials,
including sample news releases, promotional ideas, and tips. To
register, go to the National Night Out web site atwww.nationalnightout.org and
then click on 'Registration.'

We will continue to stay in touch with you on a regular basis to
provide updates on National Preparedness Month, but please feel free to
contact us at CitizenCorps@dhs.gov with any questions or updates on your
progress. Thank you for all of your help in ensuring the success of
National Preparedness Month 2006!
