The Port City Pearls Chorus has been in existence for over 25 years. Sweet Adelines is an International organization with choruses located throughout the U.S., Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, Finland, Australia and other countries. The choruses sing four-part, barbershop style harmony in English, since barbershop is an American art form.

Sweet Adelines International is a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances. This independent, nonprofit music education association is one of the world's largest singing organizations for women. ''Harmonize the World'' is the organization's motto.

Our local Sweet Adelines, The Port City Pearl Chorus, was chartered in l982. We recently celebrated our 25th anniversary. Our chorus draws women from Muscatine as well as surrounding communities such as Columbus Junction, Wapello, Grandview, Rock Island, Burlington and Fort Madison. We are from all walks of life, joined by the common bond of love for singing.

Singing Friendships Applause

The Port City Pearl Chorus rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7-9:30. Membership is open to all women who love to sing, perform, and build friendships. You do not need to know how to read music as songs are taught during rehearsals.

What is Barber Shop??

Four voice parts make up the chorus. These are: lead, which is the melody line; tenor, the high part above the melody; bass, the lowest notes; and baritone, the notes that are usually below the melody line.

It is different from any other kind of choral or group singing. Barbershop is sung in a chorus or in a quartet. Members learn vocal production and music, as well as choreography, stage production, costuming, makeup and much more.
