The question is where is the line in the sand drawn in Muscatine? Lets clean our own house before we attempt to clean the nation. Is there a possibility that the City of Muscatine doesn't have a clue as to what to do next if they don't get their normal money from the State? Are they going to just keep spending and raising taxes? Its obvious that the "tax pool" in Muscatine won't get any bigger. Will real estate values ever come back in Muscatine? If not then the "tax pool" will shrink, aren't tax values based on assessed value that is to be equal to market value. It will be up to the City fathers to determine what happens next, what should they do? |

The school system should initiate the income surtax that's available. That should be relatively painless. The county is the same position as the city. It's to late to not build the prison. I think they've stumbled a bit on the use of other building space too.
The total assessed value can go up or down but it makes no difference. They just adjust the millage rate to get the tax they need. |
