Tip: Make Your Community Safer

Use your website to promote and encourage safety...

Did you know that within your existing website, you can create an unlimited number of pages promoting safety?

What kinds of pages can I create to make my neighborhood safer? Try:
  • Warning neighbors about potential door-to-door scams
  • Alerting neighbors to local criminal activity
  • Organizing/advertising a neighborhood cleanup (criminals are attracted to neighborhoods that appear dirty or unkempt.)
  • Adding pictures/bios of the police officers who patrol your community.
  • Organizing an alley numbering or curb numbering project (to help speed response from police, fire and paramedics)
  • Creating a page of useful govt. and police contact information
  • Sharing information about recent criminal activity
  • Facilitating a neighborhood party, walk, or anything else where neighbors get to know one another.

Examples of how real organizations have made their neighborhood safer:
Madison Park
Camelot Neighborhood Association
Valley Park Civic Association

McGruff the Crime Dog's 30th Anniversary 1980 - 2010

McGruff
Happy 30th Birthday to McGruff the Crime Dog

The first public education program in the country on crime prevention, the campaign has inspired and directed millions of citizens to take action, individually and collectively, to reduce crime and improve the quality of life throughout the nation. - Senator Arlen Specter, 2005

In the late 1970s, most people felt there was nothing they could do about crime in their neighborhoods. However, after 30 years of McGruff people know that becoming active in the neighborhood and community can help prevent crime.

The first three public service ads starred the as yet unnamed dog, and a "Name the Dog" contest was announced in early 1980. A crime prevention officer from the New Orleans Police Department won the contest, and the public embraced McGruff the Crime Dog July 1st 1980.

Fighting Crime via Neighborhood Social Networking

Marlborough Mesa in Mesa, Arizona was recently able to utilize their discussion forum as a social networking tool to fight crime in their neighborhood.

Evidently there was an ice cream man in the neighborhood who was consistently "short-changing" the neighborhood kids. The information was posted on the Marlborough Mesa Discussion Forum which alerted the rest of the neighborhood. Other neighbors related similar stories about the same ice cream man. They called the police who in turn tracked down the ice cream man, questioned him, and he is no longer "short-changing" the neighborhood kids.

The Marlborough Mesa group are no strangers to using the Neighborhood Link Discussion forums as a social networking tool. Back in October they used their discussion forum to help identify an elderly neighbor who had been seriously injured in an auto accident.

Congrats to Alma Jones (their tireless webmaster) and the Marlborough Mesa Neighborhood on a job well done!
