Upper Quarter Neighborhood Watch

UQNW is located in a very residential area of the Quarter

The area of the French Quarter in which our group is located (outlined in red on the map) is primarily residential, featuring old Creole cottages and Victorian shotgun houses built during the 1800's. The designation "Upper Quarter" comes from a division of the French Quarter into Upper and Lower, whereby the Upper Quarter is the section from Canal Street to St. Ann Street, and the Lower Quarter runs from St. Ann to Esplanade Avenue. The terms relate to the flow of the Mississippi River, with "Upper" being upriver from "Lower".

Although the whole French Quarter has always enjoyed a mix of residential and commercial use, today the main residential area is the part which is covered by Upper Quarter Neighborhood Watch (outlined in red)and Lower Quarter Crime Watch (outlined in green). Together our two groups work toward making this quiet, romantic area of the French Quarter a safe place for residents as well as for the many visitors who enjoy strolling around admiring the narrow streets and the quaint architecture.

About our association

Welcome to UQNW!

Upper Quarter Neighborhood Watch is presently the only active Neighborhood Watch group in the French Quarter. We are not an organization with membership or dues, rather we are simply any neighbors who want to meet and discuss crime and quality-of-life issues affecting our particular neighborhood. We have been holding meetings every two months since 1996. At the meetings we get the latest updates from our 8th District Police Officers and in turn we voice our individual problems, complaints, and observations. We have learned that this kind of personal exchange of information with the Police Department has been very beneficial. Indeed, the police have been extremely diligent in solving our problems.

Any resident in the area may attend the meetings. They are posted on this site, but we also remind everyone by telephone (or email) during the week before the scheduled meeting. If you wish to be called, please fill out the "Become a Member" section.

Additionally, sometimes the police wish to put out an alert about a certain crime/criminal in our neighborhood, and we use this same telephone/email list to spread the word quickly. That way we can safeguard ourselves accordingly and perhaps contribute information leading to an arrest.

Getting to meet through Neighborhood Watch has strengthened our friendships with each other as well as with our police officers. We are a tight-knit neighborhood here in the Quarter, and it's important not only that we watch out for one another but that we also keep our streets safe for our many visitors.
