School Board Meeting

Posted in: PATA
Last night the teachers contract was approved by the board. I have not seen the details of the length of the contract or the percentage pay increase as yet.
Carla Faultz, representing the PEA, read a letter sent yesterday to all school board members outlining their opposition to the proposed bond issue. The letter requested the board withdraw the bond issue from the fall ballot, and work toward a community-input-based bond issue for next spring. Later in the meeting, board member Jim Brink proposed just that, but the measure died for lack of a second, as Brink stated would happen. He outlined several reasons for his opposition to the bond issue, and agreed with the teachers that a new bond issue be put on in the spring after seeking a much broader community input than what went into the current issue.
Gotta Wonder

Could it be that their raise is so high and COLAs are too that they know the they will be embarrassed at the polls when all the voters make the connection between high cost of greedy teachers and the high cost to operate schools and lose sight of the need for more space and, and, and???

After all we are Sooo Stupid!

I don't think so

I don't think that is the reason for their opposition, at least based upon the letter that was read last night. Their main reasons were given as opposing the larger school size (a possible 1000 kids) in the lower grades that they believe would disrupt the educational process, and lead to lower student performance.
Their Endorsement

Any negative endorsement by the PEA is going to make me look very carefully at the Bond Issue, I may just ask for a yard sign.

I have read in the papers that the schools will not house 1,000 students - so who is right? Sounds like the teachers didn't get everything they wanted in their contract & are throwing a hissy fit. Did Mrs. Foltz stamp her feet & turn blue as she gave her demands to the Board?

Since when should a union determine what our Community's district needs? Doesn't more schools mean more teachers - tutors, guidance, librarians, intervention, deans, principals, nurses - isn't that more membership for Carla's club?

Give me a break - paper's also state that this is $19M less than building three new schools that would be equivalent class space - Times Sun a couple of weeks ago. So the union wants us to right a check for an extra $19M because..........it's what they want? A bigger club ??

They need to grow up.
