Tlou- It all boils down to one thing. When the crap hits the fan, we all are on our own. The cops are some/many minutes away. The neighbors don't want involved. If you are successfull at defending yourself but use a gun, the media is quite likely to slant things to the side of the bad guy. You are not supposed to be able to defend yourself. You are supposed to be a victim. You'll get better publicity as a victim. The press can use your death to push for even tighter controls over EVERYTHING. When the intended victim defends his/herself, it just might give others the idea they can fight back and win. Then where would total government control be?
