 Ryan,

You really should read what you are writing about as you have answered two posts telling Nedl how he is wrong as you sited things he did not post, it was me.

Also I have Multiple Myeloma ( bone marrow cancer) and that was the first question my wife asked my Oncologist. Her reply was we have no idea what causes it or how to cure it. We try to treat it with the tools we have until a cure is found.

I also agree with Nedl about voting for you as it will not happen.

To lawdog's post:

Have you never seen American courts (or government bodies) rule for the good of the many over the good of one? Eminent domain. The American way.

Government tell you what you can or cannot eat? Happens every day. Ever look into the FDA? The American way.

Government tell you what you can or cannot watch on TV? The FCC tells us that every day, as well. The American way.

As well as many other things...the government and the courts continuously tell us what we may or may not do. Its now the American way.

One group is always appeased by rulings against another group. That is how we civilly seek renumeration and redress of our grievences, another right granted by our constitution. Ever heard of class-action suits in today's world? That is groups vs. another; possibly a single unit. Its now the American way.

I have a few comments to this...in my earlier post I stated we own our own business.  Not a bar or restaurant, and our business has been in Muscatine a long time.  So you say it won't hurt if every business is non-smoking.  You are right it won't hurt our business, but what about our rights?   Yes, my husband and I are smokers (as is some of our employees).  Who has the right to tell us we can't smoke on OUR property?  My husbands partner is a non-smoker and he thinks this whole thing is just another way for the government to have more control.  Must be something to tell everyone how to live their life.  We started counting how many customers smoke that come on our property... over half were smokers.  Funny we work 60 hrs a week and are being told we may not be able to smoke, and then there are some who collect a check every month and stay home and smoke if they want...seems backwards to me.

Nedl, I disagree on the guns comment. If you want to go and shoot animals because it's fun then i could care less. My friend and I go trap shooting every once in a great while - it's a good way to do something outdoors. But I believe in smart gun controls, like not giving guns to people who might rob me with them.

As for city buses and industrial factories - I'm for cleaning them up too. I've got nasty pictures of GPC clouds at night on a calm day.... makes me feel really sorry for everyone that lives nearby. I think we should require buses and cars and etc to be more clean also with better standards requirements.

What's wrong with having 2 inch long grass instead of 1 inch? I don't mind mowing less often - save the city some money as long as it still looks decent.

And I might argue that you can take any drug you need to so long as you aren't hurting someone else. It's imperitive in our government that we consider that other's rights are just as equal as our own. It's not really me that's bothered by smoking so significantly - my grandmother smokes and I still spend time with her at her house. But the people who are bothered shouldn't have to worry about smoke wherever they go.

Now, there's a lot of small arguments here - the 'rights' of business owners, etc. But if no businesses allow smoking then no business are going to lose business.... so it can't possibly hurt the business owner, no? Economically speaking, cigarettes hurt everyone. They cause increased cancer rates and more, increasing health care/insurance costs for everyone - there is scientific evidence showing all the harm cancer causes.

Let's say "John" doesn't like smoking.

Yes John does not get dragged into a busines that allows smoking against his free will. But John has the same right to not have to work his life around someone else's decision. If there is one bowling alley in town and they allow smoking, what's John's option? He has every right to go bowling on his terms, when he wants to. So your argument that Jack can smoke on his terms, when he wants to is the same sort of thing. Now we come to the question, who's rights are stronger. In this case, John's rights are stronger because 1) his action doesn't hurt anybody else, 2) John can't bowl at home, but Jack can smoke at home, 3) Jack's action, smoking, has the most negative externalities.

And so in every legal and economic and moral sense, the right of the nonsmoker trumps that of the smoker.

As for bowling...last I knew(and it could have changed) the bowling alley has smoke-free Sunday.

AND this whole ban comes down to one thing... It isn't about second hand smoke, if smokers have no place to smoke, maybe we will quit.  This is all about getting the smokers to quit and it is a shame they have to cover up with the second hand smoke story instead of being honest about their true intentions. But if we all quit, where will the money we pay for cig tax come from to fill the coffers?

As for the gun control.....if you asked every person to turn over any gun they had, do you really think you would get them all?   Only from the honest, upstanding citizen...the guy who you don't want to give a gun to because he might rob you is going to keep his.  The sad thing is, there will always be that problem and it is the law abiding citizen that has to pay the price.   As it is with almost everything....sad isn't it.
