plows out during the night

I was out all night and did see the plows working...on the precious emergency routes only. These were clean down to the pavement. The rest of the city was let to pile up.
A fire truck even had to take a longer route to answer a call (on a non emergency street) because it couldn't get up a hill.
Maybe if I put an arch up on my street the city will plow it in a timely manner.

snow removal

I wasn't whining about the snow-removal at all. Tons of roads to plow, only so many hours in a day, I get it.

I only questioned the decision to have school when even at 10:15 or so, the roads were not safe.

I would HATE to be the one making that call, as the rest of us can just sit here and say ''they should have/shouldn't have''...but from my driving experience yesterday, I would not want kids out on the road.

herman, lionjack, its

Its,
Sulzberger does still do the snow removal in the downtown area. I don't know what their procedure is for warning the people there ahead of time.

Lionjack,
The city can no longer dump snow on the riverfront, they'd like to, but the DNR rules have made that a definate no no. I think you'll find that as of today most places are passible, maybe not perfect but you can get to where you want to go fairly easy now. I do know they were hauling snow most of yesterday, more than likely off of those beautiful culdescas everyone seems to think are so great until something like this happens. No where to put this kind of snow on a dead end street. Thursday or Friday they were taking snow off of the bridges also.

Herman,
Most of the city plows were running for more than 72 hrs. straight, not counting one that went down with problems that kept it off the road for two days or so. The same 6 people on nights were plowing from Tuesday night, until Friday night, so don't tell me they weren't trying to get a handle on the situation. There was no question as to whether there was overtime pay available, as I said though, 6 people on nights are working straight time for the first 8 hrs. anyway.

Other than the streets being rough from the packed snow on them, I think things are decent compared to what what we had last Wednesday. Society these days seems to think that everything should be ''fixed'' right now. I don't care what city you live in, no city this size is going to get 10'' of snow plowed out in a day. Like I said before, take a trip to Davenport, and see what kind of mess they have up there still.

As for plowing out the schools, I can't tell you why they aren't given more priority. I can tell you in my days of going to school, there was no where near the amount of parents driving their kids to school, as we have today. It's ridiculous, the amount of traffic around the schools everyday. In my day, you walked, rode a bike, or rode the bus. In reality for all those concerned, school should have been canceled instead of a 2 hr. delay in my opinion.
