For over 15 years, INC’s Dollar Dictionary Drive has provided a dictionary and thesaurus free to every third-grade student in the Denver Public Schools (DPS). INC believes this important educational gift to our young Denverites helps make a stronger community. In fact, we have found that – in some cases – these books are the only books the children own.
The funding for the Dollar Dictionary Drive comes from individuals and Denver neighborhood organizations. To date, over 230,000 books have been placed.
As background: In 1995, an Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation member brought the Dictionary Project (www.dictionaryproject.org) to the attention of INC. The INC membership approved establishing a committee to oversee a Denver branch of the nationally known Dictionary Project. Thus the INC Dollar Dictionary Dirve was born.
Dictionary Project loses a friend
Every year since 1996, the Denver Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation has conducted its Dollar Dictionary Drive to provide dictionaries and thesauruses for each third grader in the Denver Public Schools, about 6,000 students each year. Cathee Fisher has been the co-chair of this project and its enthusiastic promoter. We were saddened this week to learn that she passed away suddenly.
The Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation is determined to continue the project this year in her memory and to provide both dictionaries and thesauruses to all of the students. Cathee was instrumental in having the child-friendly Thesaurus: Synonyms and Antonyms published by Dictionary Project, Inc. She helped inspire the cover design and wrote a forward to the book.
Those interested in supporting the Dollar Dictionary Drive can do so by visiting the INC website or sending a contribution to Dollar Dictionary, P. O. Box 18347, Denver, CO 80218.

Thank you all for your contributions and support, enabling us to provide these life-long tools to our third-grade students, so they can help themselves to literacy and learning.
"The Distribution Event"
Each year, through a massive INC and community effort, some 19,000 books will be unpacked, gift labeled, counted, repacked, and transported to the DPS central distribution center for final delivery to 90 DPS elementary schools. The location for this extravaganza will be posted on the INC Calendar, and you are enthusiastically welcome to stop by and help.
Please keep spreading the word. For additional information or to get contact information for your neighborhood school, contact Steve Nissen at 303-733-8524 or pennissen@cs.com.
