Our Canyon Beauties

Friends of Fox Canyon -- Happy days are just around the corner!  Past experiences have thought us the scary lessons of seen canyon fires right up our decks, windows and house walls.  Fortunately for us, in the last five years, no homes or human life have been lost.  But the loss of habitat and the indigenous species (fauna and flora) that inhabit our canyons is irreplaceable.

In addition, human mismanagement and urban sprawl are ever constricting the natural state and beauty of our five-finger canyon, which urgently needs preserving and protecting.

THE SIERRA CLUB

This morning (11/12/03, at 10:00 AM), Mr. Eric Bowlby, Canyon Preservation Organizer, the Sierra Club, toured Fox Canyon. The San Diego Sierra Club will partner with the Neighborhood Association to organize the first hike, and thereon: to guide the convervancy efforts to restore and enhance the Auburn Creek and manage our open spaces.

Course of ACTION:

1. Canyon Management -- Education, brush clearing for fire prevention (risk) and canyon cleanups. Educational campaign to stop local residents from establishing mini-dumps on their canyon-side back(side)yards.

2. Canyon Habitat -- Enhancement and restoration of local biological resources, flora and fauna.

3. Canyon Preservation -- Campaign to protect the open-space nature of Fox Canyon, open space easements and (steep) hill/slope preservation and protection.

4. Creek Preservation and Enhancemnt -- The Auburn Creek tributary to the greater Chollas Creek needs to be restore and enhance for habitat, recreation, and flood control. The vision of this creek's project is nested in the Park System as per the Fox Canyon Parks Subcommittee Report and the Chollas Creek Enhancement Plan.

'Friends of Fox Canyon and the Auburn Creek' -- The strategy will be to channel through this effort the outline described above, and market this program throughout the region. We need to organized these efforts thru a members bank and actively seek members. Please, email back your desire to be in our "Friends" list. We need every one to help and develop a strong list!

'Friends of Fox Canyon Hikes' -- Effort is placed to find a date, after the holidays, to schedule the first "hike" through Fox Canyon, along the Auburn Creek. Please, volunteer to deliver flyers and to hike along with us! It will be fund and educational!

Keep in touch, there's more to come!
