Domestic Violence: "What can I do"

Empower yourself to protect yourself

The following information is found in the "Victim Resource Guide" published by Jefferson County Police. For a copy of the brochure, please visit the Cedar Park office located at 11353 North Tazwell.

If you are abused, get away from your abuser. Secure yourself at a neighbor's home or in a room with a working phone. Call 911. When the office arrives she/he will take control of the situation to ensure your safety. An investigation will be completed and the officer will file a report. At that time, the officer will 1) make an arrest, 2) explain other legal options, or 3) refer to a socal service agency.

Depending on the situation you may be eligible for an Emergency Protective Order (EPO.) An EPO will order the abuser to do one or more of the following: 1) stop further acts of violence, 2) not to sell, damage, or destroy family property, 3) vacate the premises, 4) have no contact with you, and 5) award temporaty custody of children to you.

You can get an EPO at the Hall of Justice or Judicial Center. You can obtain an EPO 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For more information on where to obtain one, contact the Cedar Park office at 426-3750.
