BUSY BEAVERS PUBLIC ART LEADS TO MUSIC PAVILION

Oct 22, 2003

CFNBA 2003-2004 Public Art Project

"Neighborhood Engineers, Building a NEW Image"

......The concept is a JAZZ & BLUES MUSIC PAVILION located on an 11.2 acre Milwaukee County Park, called Johnsons Park.

......Johnson Park is located at 17th & Fond du Lac Avenue in Milwaukee.

Johnson Park is named after Cornelius and Cleopatra Johnson. Two civic-minded African Americans from Tuskegee, Alabama. They were Tailors in the Milwaukee area for over 40 years. They created the 1st YMCA on the north side for African Americans.

Johnsons Park is a beautifully manicured park in an area of economic change.

The park has a history of "being well-groomed" under the management leadership of Jerry Edwards of the Park Department.

We were able to convince the powers to be to add some very needed amenities; namely, a WATER FOUNTAIN(after many years of non-installation), PAINT JOB for the Field House - food court, bathrooms and storage area this summer(2003); and, two electrical boxes.

NEW RESIDENT
The new homes are in the $125,000 - $200,000 range. The older stock is mid 20's - $40's.

......Fond du Lac Avenue is a major thoroughfare of 25,000 plus per day of traffic.

......The homes being built directly across the street are $100k plus.

......It is an area of diversity with young, middle and senior stakeholders that are residential and commercial. They are Asian, Latino, Caucasian, American Indian, Mideasterners and predominately African American.

BEAVER ART FORMS
The Busy Beavers Public Art Project is a ''fundraiser'' to help jumpstart this project.

We have an initial goal of $125,000. The project runs from October 1, 2003 to October 2, 2004.

ARCHITECTS
CFNBA is looking for ARCHITECTS to be a part of the Busy Beavers Public Art Project to submit designs for the Art Forms and to submit drafts for consideration of the Music Pavilion. Drawings - Renderings.

COMPOSITION
For the last four summers, Independence Day thru Labor Day, CFNBA has been in partnership with the Milwaukee County Park system and sponsored Jazz & Blues @ Johnson Park.

The concerts have outgrown its beginning. It needs a stage with a covering, sound system, special lighting and protection from inclement weather.

It also needs to be ''self-sustaining'' with revenue streams.

We will have year-round activity geared to:

1. Public Entertainment
2. Training/Education Component
3. Eating and Dining Facilities
4. Music Creation

We will continue the summer concerts with local musicians; and, add national and international artists. It will have many more amenities.

Training Symposium –In addition to the summer outdoor concerts, CFNBA will sponsor indoor programs that include TRAINING in the areas of Blues and Jazz with the ''JAZZ and BLUES MASTERS''.

JAZZ MASTERS selected so far are Musicians: Manty Ellis, Al Jarreau, George Stanceil, Burkeley Fudge.

......Protege Training that allows serious concentration by Milwaukee Public Schools students, such as the Milwaukee School of the Arts, Roosevelt and others to learn and compete under the directions of specialized coursework, technology and teachers.

The concert hall is to be wired w/state-
of-the-art technology for the finest listening and seating pleasure.

The hall will feature a life-size sculpture of the individuals the halls will be named after.
