Steven's Report: (Steven Sible, Chair)

I want to thank all those that attended our PNA quarterly meetings in May, we had a great turn out for both. Tuesday night we had Olivia Draper from Colter Park Apartments update us on all the changes and upgrades they have made to the complex and apartments and spoke briefly on the community and clientele that live there and what their plans are for the future. They are definitely taking the complex in a new direction as far as pre-qualification requirements, clientele and family’s that live and work there, and planning an improved upscale and professional environment to live in. Colter Park Apartments and Lincoln Property Company management are very interested in becoming more involved in the Pasadena Neighborhood and helping make this a place that people who are looking for their first home after apartment living will want to consider the PNA their future home. We also discussed a combined community event this fall once the weather cools down which sounds like a great idea to help bring the two communities together.

Next up on Tuesday we had Scott Magley from the City of Phoenix Public Works Department give us all the update and details behind the new combined trash pick-up dates that are changing this summer. Beginning the week of July 9th residential trash and recycling collection days will change to “Same Day” collection. Collecting both trash and recycle on the same day will help increase efficiency and keep costs down for all residents. During the months of June and July, customers will receive a postcard in the mail explaining the specific change and collection day for each household. Additional information on same-day service will appear on phoenix.gov; Phoenix Channel 11, the city’s television station on Cox Cable; and the May/June issue of Notes, which is a newsletter in your monthly city services bill.

Tuesday evening we also honored our Community Action Officer Aaron Stevens with a huge thank you card signed by several residents and a gift card for Dutch Brother’s Coffee in honor and appreciation for his 5 years of service to our neighborhood and as an outstanding Community Action Officer.

Saturday May 5th we had our PNA neighborhood meeting on Colter at the home of Art and Kyle. We also want to thank Art for donating two sets of Diamondbacks Game tickets as door prizes for the Saturday meeting. Our guest speakers on Saturday were Nina Penny from Arizona Wholesale Mortgage who gave us all the information regarding the newly available HARP (Home Affordable Refinance Program) an initiative from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) to assist homeowners whose homes are now worth less than what they owe. We also had Kristin Jacobs with Service One Home Warranty solutions to help not only those purchasing a home but those of us that already have a home to acquire a home warranty program. Lisa Hubbard from Neighborhood Services closed out our Saturday meeting with upcoming information about business along camelback and future plans for new business coming to Camelback between 7th Ave and 19th Ave. Also if you have not noticed, construction work for the NEW LA Fitness has begun and they will be tearing down the old Target building to begin construction. This means the main entrance off 7th Ave will be shut down until construction is complete so if you are entering the parking lot off 7th Avenue you will have to turn in further South by the Urgent Care facility.

I would also like to take this time to welcome our newest family JD, Michele, and family to the neighborhood all the way from Ireland. At our last quarterly meeting they were in the process of purchasing their home and the pancake breakfast was a great welcome party for all of us. On a sad note I would also like to mention the passing of longtime resident and home owner Geraldine Hickey on Colter this month. Gerry is also well known for her many years of service at Durant’s on Central.

Correction:

First I would like to start off with a correction and an apology. In last month’s newsletter I mentioned the passing of Dorothy Dulson on Colter and that is incorrect. Dorothy is alive and well and I even saw her climbing up on a ladder the other day to change a light bulb. I meant to say Geraldine aka “Dean” Hickey. Geraldine was 74 when she passed away on March 26th. She moved to Phoenix in the early 1970’s and worked at Durant’s Restaurant for over 26 years where she was known as “Dean” the waitress with the Boston accent.

Alley Address Numbering Project:

Just a friendly reminder that AJ and Al, and a few of us helpers, will be starting the House Numbering project in the alley’s. The Phoenix Police Department has asked all of us to paint our house numbers on the gates or block walls in the alley for each of our homes. The reason behind this is that when the Phoenix Police are investigating a break in and going through the alley, the house address numbers in the alley help them zero in faster on the exact home they are trying to investigate or catch a thief in the back yard. Some of you have already painted your house numbers on your gates or alley walls and we say "thank you." Our very own VP Al and Secretary AJ have volunteered their time to go through the alley’s and paint house numbers on the wall or gate for each home. This has proved beneficial in the Maryvale neighborhood in catching criminals and we want to try and get every home in the PNA updated to assist the phoenix police officers. It would be awesome to hear the City of Phoenix recognize the PNA as one of the premier neighborhoods to adopt this strategy and set the standards for all other neighborhoods. So be on the lookout for Al and AJ painting numbers in the alley early mornings the next couple of months, and if you would like to volunteer to assist with this project, please contact myself or AL or AJ for more information.

Porch Light – Pros and Cons

I was asked to write up a short article about the pros and cons related to porch lights and outdoor lighting in our neighborhood so I thought I would take a stab at it by mentioning the pros and cons and what I have noticed around our neighborhood.

I personally like having my porch lights on all night. I feel it adds a little extra security around my home at night, I don’t like coming home to a dark house after dark, I can look out my windows and see what is going on and who may be outside, and it adds the security benefit that police and emergency personnel can easily identify my home and house numbers at night in the event of an emergency. It is a well-known fact that most home break-ins and burglaries in our neighborhood happen during the day when we are all away at work. However, it does help prevent tampering with cars in our carports and driveways if our outside area is well lit. There are several options. I prefer to have a 40 or 60 watt bug bulb on all night while some homes owners have motion sensor lights that come on when someone approaches the home or there are also new alternatives that are very attractive such as dimming lights that go dim and when motion is sensed they light up fully. Some people feel that if you leave a porch light on through the night that it makes you house less attractive to someone that may want to break in so that would be a pro. A con would be higher electric bill.

The other reason I like the street lights, porch lights, and decorative lighting is the safety factor. I have recently acquired a dog and starting walking her in the evenings now that it is getting warmer. One of the things I have noticed is that we have a few streets in our neighborhood that are very dark. And when I am walking down the sidewalk or street I can see everyone’s home and even see inside very clearly when it is dark outside but when you are sitting inside with the lights on you cannot see me standing or walking outside your home. Just as I remind people to have their blinds turned looking down so that you can see out and down but someone outside can only see in and up at the ceiling and not down and in at you.

I’m not trying to scare anyone and I know everyone has their own personal preference and comfort level. I will say we have one of the safest neighborhoods and this is due to everyone being aware and alert of what is going on around them. Anything we can do to help prevent crime and keep our neighborhood a safe and desirable place to live is a good thing. I just wanted to bring out the pros and cons of decorative lighting and porch lights around our homes and help make everyone aware of some of the potential issues and thoughts and suggestions on the matter. - Security on site from 10:00pm - 2:00am and on-call from 2:00am - 6:00am.

- Nightly police report is referenced.

- They have monthly & holiday activities. Possible joint event at the park.

- Scott explained ho this is better, cheaper, & easier.

- Bins need to be 4 FEET APART & 4 FEET FROM any other object including parked cars.

- They prefer bins ON SIDEWALK & NOT IN THE STREET.

- The only "holidays" are ... Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.

- Drivers will work four 10-hour days.

- The earliest a truck will arrive in the neighborhood MAY be at 6:15. We are not sure what time we will be.

- NO GROCERY BAGS...Do bring those BACK to grocery stores since they have recycle barrels. OR, re-fill the Colter Park "dog bag" holder. (AJ = I bring mine back to Fry's. The bin is in the entrance alcove to the right.)

- Notices will be in water bills. Our next Bulk Trash is on August 27th; we are area 13.

Officer Aaron Stevens

- The Board presented Aaron with his FIVE YEARS as COA award & gift cards. The treats were "hippy" themed. AJ read a poem. All present signed a poster for him. He was presented with a map of the Mountain View Precinct with the Pasadena Neighborhood highlighted in bright yellow. (see attachments for poem). He was surprised & speechless.

- Aaron said he likes us so much since we wave at him when he is in the 'hood...with all 5 fingers.

- He said we have frequent meetings & varied events and that people SHOW-UP!

- The "red dot" of high crime concentration has moved FROM Camelback/15th to 19th/Camelback.

NEW BUSINESS

- Upcoming Meetings are Tuesday, August 7th & Saturday, August 11th.

Then, on Tuesday, November 6th (Election Day) and Saturday, November 10th.

- Block Party GAIN Event in October...13th.

- Address numbers will be painted over the summer per request from Phoenix police officers. The city has approved residences on fill and the PSN board has a map of approved houses.

Look for info in the June newsletter and in email "blasts" from the board.

- PNA has 4 more certified Blight Busters including Blanca & Steven. Ray & April are leaders in this area, too.

Hi All,

Please remember that criminals don't take holidays off and can prey on holiday weekends as a lot of people will be out of town. Be sure to set your alarms to your houses, utilize lights on timers, lock all doors and windows and get somebody to check your house on a regular basis. Call on all suspicious people or vehicles you see wandering around.

Equally important please don't leave anything in the passenger compartments of your vehicles...even if running into the store for a quick minute. It only takes a second to break the window of a vehicle and take your belongings. If you are the victim of a vehicle burglary check to ensure your garage door opener is not missing as well, as this can lead to a residential burglary....who locks the door between the garage and house after all... :)

Summer time in Phoenix we see an increase in "night time" activity due to the heat and the day shift begins to slow down slightly. Keep your lights turned on in the front and back yards all night long. This helps not only you to see what is going on around your property but also allows neighbors who happen to drive by as well as police patrolling the area. Criminals love to hide in the cover of darkness. Cat burglaries (burglary when you are home) are very rare but they do occur and usually thru unlocked doors and open garages in the middle of the night.

The final thing is please remember that we see an increase in DUI's during holiday weekends and plan to have DUI task force in full effect. Please don't drink and drive!!!

Hello dear lovers of choral music!

The date for the C. D. Singers' final concert has been set; our director,
Daniel Durand, is moving on to full-time private teaching in San Diego, and
we will disband after our June concert. We hope you will join us on
Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 7:30 (note the time change) at Prince of Peace
Lutheran church at 3641 North 56th St., in Phoenix.

This performance will feature Mozart's piano concerto in F Major, K. 459,
played by our director Daniel Durand, and Johann Sebastian Bach's
Magnificat. The chorus will again be accompanied by a professional chamber
orchestra.

About the chorus:

In case you're new to our mailing list, here's a brief history of the chorus
and its director, Daniel Durand. Mr. Durand has a long history of promoting
and conducting choral music in the Valley. His Phoenix choral conducting
career began in 1966 with Epiphany concerts at St. Agnes Catholic church and
continued for the next 25 years. Mr. Durand led the Bach and Madrigal
Society for 21 yrs and later founded Cantemus, which he led for three years.
He left the Valley in 1991, but began commuting from San Diego for concerts
with C.D. Singers in 1993 and has continued ever since.

Daniel Durand was the first to conduct J. S. Bach's B Minor Mass with
orchestra here in the Valley. Other major repertoire he has presented to
Valley audiences include Bach's St. John and St. Matthew Passions, Berlioz'
L'Enfance du Christ, and Britten's St. Nicholas. Mr. Durand considers the
Bach and Mozart bicentennials in 1985 and 1991 to be the highlights of those
years.

The City of Phoenix Summer Children's Opera was built on an idea of Mr.
Durand's. He conducted the group for seven years, leading the children in
works by Ravel, Kodaly, Britten and Menotti, as well as a commissioned opera
by Phoenix composer David Cohen. In addition, Mr. Durand was responsible
for several works commissioned from composers David Cohen and Henry Papale.
"La Maison Construite par Jean" was the first Cohen work commissioned by
Durand.

As Daniel Durand retires from choral conducting, he intends to focus more
exclusively on his work coaching both singers and instrumentalists.
Audience members who regularly attend C. D. Singers concerts are aware that
Mr. Durand has brought several of his students to the Valley as featured
soloists. A masterful pianist, he often accompanies his students in
recitals and juried competitions.

Daniel Durand has also written a book, Music and Feeling: An Inquiry into
the Relationship of Notation and Technique. Of it, Mr. Durand says, "I
wrote the book to give performers a more precise definition of musical
expression. Since 'great' music is meant to move us rather than entertain
us, the necessity of how to find such movement in the score rather than in
'show biz' becomes urgent. The art is becoming lost today."Daniel Durand
has also written a book, Music and Feeling. Of it, Mr. Durand says, "I
wrote the book to give performers a more precise definition of musical
expression. Since 'great' music is meant to move us rather than entertain
us, the necessity of how to find such movement in the score rather than in
'show biz' becomes urgent. The art is becoming lost today."

PNA Recipe Exchange

3, 2, 1 CAKE

These individual little cakes are amazing and ready to eat in one minute! They are perfect for whenever you feel like a treat without all the fat and calories that cake can have. Genius idea!

INGREDIENTS:

1 box Angel Food Cake Mix

1 box Cake Mix - Any Flavor

2 Tbsp Water

Makes 1 serving.

DIRECTIONS:

In a ziploc bag, combine the two cake mixes together and mix well. For each individual cake serving, take out 3 Tablespoons of the cake mix combination and mix it with 2 Tablespoons of water in a small microwave-safe container. Microwave on high for 1 minute, and you have your own instant individual little cake!

KEEP remaining cake mixture stored in the ziploc bag and use whenever you feel like a treat! You can top each cake with a dollop of fat free whipped topping and/or some fresh fruit.

Helpful Tips:

This recipe is called 3, 2, 1 Cake because all you need to remember is "3 tablespoons mix, 2 tablespoons water, 1 minute in the microwave!"

TRY various flavors of cake mix like carrot, red velvet, pineapple, lemon, orange, etc. Just remember that one of the mixes has to be the angel food mix; the other is your choice. The flavor possibilities are endless!

NOTES:

The best thing is, you open both cake mixes into a gallon storage bag, one that 'zip locks' or 'self-seals', or a container that seals tightly, shake the two cake mixes to blend and then make the recipe. Storage of mix is simple, put it on a shelf. No need to refrigerate, since the mix is dry. Always remember, that one of the cake mixes MUST be Angel Food. The other can be any flavor. The Angel Food is the cake mix that has the egg whites in it. So, if, anyone is allergic to egg whites, DO NOT serve this recipe!
