In Memoriam

Maria Norvell
This year has not been a good year for Wrigley, we have lost a lot of Wrigley members. I would like to give our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the families for their loved ones that have passed.
Jeannine Lawlor and family lost their son Casey in August. He was involved in a automobile accident. The Lawlor?’s are long time residents and Wrigley Association members. Casey was only 20 years old; he grew up in Wrigley. He was a very nice young man; he also played with the Junior Concert Band. Our sincere condolences to the family on the passing of their son.
Betty Bennett passed away late June. Betty was a very devoted and dedicated person in Wrigley. She was raised in Wrigley and resided at the San Francisco address even after she married. She was a beautiful person and will be remembered by all.
Brad Stary lived on Daisy before we become an Association. He was the first to volunteer for Christmas Tree Lane. He became my dedicated volunteer; he helped with any thing that had to do with Daisy. He was a Neighborhood Watch Block captain for the 2000 block of Daisy. When the Safe Streets Program came to Long Beach. Brad and his neighbors successfully sued an owner for a problem house that was dealing in drugs and were very bad neighbors. Margaret Madden the director of the program really helped them in their effort. Each family was awarded $5000.00 I think there were 5 families involved Brad and Barbara had to leave Wrigley about 4 years ago to go and take care of a sick aunt in Iowa. They rented their home to family members. Shortly, after they left Brad was diagnosed with cancer. I spoke with them and they also wrote to keep me undated. Barbara contacted me a couple of weeks ago to let me know Brad passed away on June 30th this news hit me hard Brad was a very young man. She wants to dedicate a tree for Brad on Daisy. Asked me if I would make the arrangements. I have contacted the department that handles tree planting. I?’m hoping that it will be in October that?’s when they start with the planting of trees. I don?’t know yet if Barbara will be coming out or not.
A neighbor across the street from the Stary?’s former home also passed away . His name was Bill Flett. He was also a neighborhood treasure and helped with the decorations in front of their home. Chuck Furhman will help with the money to plant the tree in their memory
We have planted quite a few trees on Daisy that were donated in remembrance of lost loved ones . If you need additional information on the Tree Memorials, call me at 427-5016.

Christmas Tree Lane Update: September 2006

I haven?’t been giving as many updates on Christmas Tree Lane as in the past. I apologize. I have been recovering from my knee injury that happened on December 18, 2005.
It?’s that time of year again. Next week the band letters will go out to our local schools. The Parade applications will go out at the end of the month. The best news is that I will be working with Monique again from Councilwoman Uranga?’s office.

Everything is going well. Jim Trout and I purchased the plywood in May for the 8 foot by 4 Christmas Stockings. Jim cut them out and primed them for me. We have accomplished a lot. I didn?’t have to buy much paint. I?’m using paint that we have stored in the garage. We should be finished by the end of the month. They are really cute, I?’ll bring one to the October meeting. Volunteers ?— I will have sign up sheets at our monthly meetings until the Parade.

Mark your calendars! Until next time?…

Please Note!
Partners of Parks is no longer handling donations to Christmas Tree Lane. Maria with much appreciated assistance from Janet Deats, is working on forming a non-profit corporation to handle donations accepted by the Wrigley Association for this event. This step is necessary to ensure that all money accepted for this purpose is isolated from our general funds and is tax deductible. Contact Maria at 427-5012 to find out how to make donations until the paperwork is filed with the Internal Revenue Service later this month. Thank you!
