New monthly pickup system for large brush piles and bulky trash

Input 8/14/04

Fort Worth City Council has approved a new monthly pickup system for large
brush piles and bulky trash. The new “big trash” system will begin this
fall. In the meantime, residents must follow a temporary pickup schedule for
placing large limbs, old mattresses and other bulky trash at the curb. (See
temporary schedule below.)

Monthly big trash and brush pickup will cost $1.97 more per household per
month. The increase will not appear on your water bill until after the new
service begins later this year.

Details of the new bulk trash service still must be worked out with the city
’s contractor Waste Management. The city will mail information to your home
to let you know when the new monthly pickup will begin and how to place
materials at the curb.

The new, monthly bulk trash service will not affect your regular weekly
garbage, recycling, paper yard bag or optional yard cart services. New rates
for weekly service will be set later this year.

In July, the city did away with its call-in system for bulk trash because
some residents did not know to call or wouldn’t call, leaving piles
uncollected in some areas of the city. The new system will give residents a
regularly scheduled monthly pickup. The city will charge residents an
additional pickup fee if they place materials at the curb improperly or
outside of the pickup schedule.

Remember: the new monthly big trash and brush service will not begin until
the fall, so follow the temporary schedule below. For more information, call
817-392-EASY (3279) or visit www.fortworthgov.org/dem.

Temporary Schedule for Bulk Trash...

If your garbage day is on:
Monday, set out brush & bulk trash no later than 7 a.m. on Aug. 23 and Sept.
27.

Tuesday, set out brush & bulk trash no later than 7 a.m. on July 26 and Aug.
30.

Wednesday, set out brush & bulk trash no later than 7 a.m. on Aug. 2 and
Sept. 6.

Thursday, set out brush & bulk trash no later than 7 a.m. on Aug. 9 and
Sept. 13.

Friday, set out brush & bulk trash no later than 7 a.m. on Aug. 16 and Sept.
20.

Trucks will travel down each street only once, so make sure materials are at
the front curb by 7 a.m. on your setout date. Waste will be collected during
the week of your setout date, but not necessarily on your garbage pickup
day. You may set out materials as early as 7 a.m. the Saturday before your
setout date. Do not place additional bulk trash and brush at the curb until
crews are scheduled to return to your area.

As always, you must place materials properly at the curb in front of your
home:
* Separate wood, brush and limbs from bulk trash.

* Do not place piles under overhead utility wires or near parked cars,
mailboxes, carts, or other obstacles.

* Do not put plastic garbage bags on brush or bulk piles. Garbage bags must
go inside the brown cart.
