I posed this query as part of my response to Doug's ''is anybody out there question'' Thought I'd start a new thread as well....

What positions re: Jacks forced closure are out there....

Is there any chance there would be support within the neighborhood for helping to get the old Sylvan Park Grocery Story re-zoned to sell beer in the event George can negotiate a lease?

Anyone interested in speaking on George's behalf should contact Channel 4 news... They would like to do a story on the issue.

Jack's ,What happened?

Living in sunny Florida Keys, I'm stunned to see that there are issues with Jack's Market. Closing that place is like tearing down the Jacksonian. What is next, the Parthenon turned into another ''ShopryLand''. Jacks Market and George in particular is the only place that I have EVER been able to make a purchase after I forgot my wallet. Try that at Kroger.
Please bring me up to speed on what is/has happened to Jacks.
Still love Nashville and Sylvan Park but a little good news would be nice.
Regards,
Jorge Catasus

What's up...

Jack's Landlord showed up a week or so ago about 3 o'clock in the afternoon and told him he had 30 days to be out. Apparently she wants to ''clean the place up'' and put her daughter in charge.

I've heard rumor that folks have offered free labor to fix it up if she'd let him stay but no go.

Its her building she can do what she wants but I will never shop there again.

In reality she'll probably end up putting in some herb shop or other new-age B.S. to help further yuppify the neighborhood.

Anybody want to buy a Queen Ann cottage?

Jack's lost his lease

When I arrived at the Sylvan Park Neighborhood Association meeting on 2/12/01, I first thought I was in the wrong place. So many people, standing room only.

They were all ready and willing to speak out in favor of keeping Jack's open and where it is. Mrs. Crowe and her husband were there and stood and spoke to the crowd - which took some chutzpah. They offered no circumstances under which George (''Jack's'') could stay. They said they liked George just like everybody else does, that it was nothing against him, they just wanted to do something different with their property. They asked the people there to just give them a chance. They talked of their long-standing residence in and committment to the neighborhood.

No one spoke in the Crowe's defense. Several felt so attached to George and the kindnesses he has shown so many neighbors that they had trouble in not responding belligerently to the Crowes.

In the end, they could only agree to disagree. Most who left shortly after the exchange were either sad or angry.

Everyone agrees the Crowes are within their rights, but I haven't come across anyone yet who likes it. Time will tell.
