Historic Russell Woods-Sullivan Neighborhood

Russell Woods was first platted in 1925. Most of the housing west of Petoskey is in the Russell Woods section of the Historic District. These homes are generally full brick Tudor Revivals with 2 1/2 stories above grade and full basements. There are some Craftsman bungalows, Moderne and Colonial Revivals. Along the northern border of the neighborhood the single family home gives way to apartment complexes and dual family homes from the same era. One thing you will notice in Russell Woods is the rich diversity of homes. No two are alike.

Sullivan is the name of the section east of Petoskey. These homes were built in the 1930's and are more uniform in style. The architecture does lean towards Tudor Revival, but there are still some interesting examples of Moderne and Colonial Revival mixed in. This is the neiborhood that Diana Ross lived in early in her career.

The hidden gem of Detroit

Russell Woods-Sullivan is a hidden jewel in the center of Detroit. There is easy access to I-96, Davison Freeway, I-75, I-696 and the Lodge. Almost all of Metro Detroit is 20 minutes away.

Russell Woods-Sullivan is a primarily African-American upper middle class neighborhood. Historically the neighborhood was on the edge of the Jewish Quarter in Detroit. House prices run between $70 and $100 a square foot. Plaster crown moldings, Craftsman designed interiors, full brick exteriors and quiet, safe streets make these homes irresistable.

Urban living and Suburban planning

Russell Woods-Sullivan was platted in much the same manner as its counterparts in Oakland county and northern Wayne. There is a central Park where the Homeowners Association holds events. The streets are tree lined and the people friendly.

This is the center of Detroit, but there are small groceries all around the neighborhood on Livernois, Linwood and Davison. There is a BankOne in the neighborhood, CVS, RiteAid and, of course, the neighborhood liquor stores.

This is a safe, progressive neighborhood with great housing stock and wonderful people. Gay people can live next to Ministers without problems. Caucasians and African-Americans can live side by side without any issues. This is the American dream community come true.
