A Friend to the Friendless?…

Every year between 2,500 and 3,000 individuals visit the River of Life Mission looking for a meal, a shower, a change of clothes ?…a friend. These are men, women and children, some homeless, most poor, all needy. They are the elderly and the drug addicted; the veteran and the prostitute; the mentally ill and the disabled; the lonely and the forgotten. We refer to them as guests of the River of Life Mission. Since 1986, whatever their need, the mission has been a friend to them.

Located in the ninety five year-old, historic-registry-tabbed Sumida Building on the corner of Pauahi and Maunakea Streets in Chinatown, Honolulu, the mission has been the only open door for many of these, who through error, disability or circumstance have been left friendless. Here, however, there is no regard for wealth, gender, race, appearance or faith. Everyone is welcome at the River of Life Mission and all services are free of charge.

The mission is open Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 8:00pm, and on Sundays for an evening service. Our address is 101 N. Pauahi St. in Chinatown, Honolulu.

Rescue, Rehab, Reintegration

At the River of Life Mission, lives are restored through the process of rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration. Our desire is not only to provide for the immediate needs of our guests, but to change their circumstances through a changed perspective.

Our services begin with rescue: those which are essential for survival. They include food, showers, clothing, emergency medical care (through Kalihi Palama Health Care for the Homeless Project), legal aid and emotional counseling. Next is rehabilitation: those services which provide for recovery, awareness, change and growth. These include 12-step programs, anger management classes, Bible studies, job training and more counseling. Last, is reintegration: those services which provide for the transition from a condition of dependence and need, to one of self-sufficiency and contribution. These include a work program, a residential program (future), and discipleship classes.

In 1999, the mission purchased the Sumida Building to triple the amount of space it had operated out of for fourteen years, to expand its present rescue services and to increase the number of its rehabilitation and reintegration programs.

In order to pay off the mortgage loan and complete expansion renovations, a capital campaign was kicked off in 2000. If you would like to contribute to the purchase or renovation of the building, you may make checks out to the ROLM Capital Campaign and send them to the River of Life Mission. P. O. A Calling . . .

The River of Life Mission is a Christian non-profit (501(c)(3)) organization that receives no governmental funding of any kind. Rather, it is through the generosity and compassion of the community which comprise individuals, churches, schools, the military, businesses, private foundations and other human service organizations that the mission resources are never depleted. They provide the food, the clothing, the funding and the volunteer support to serve the 90,000 meals yearly, distribute the 2500 articles of clothes monthly and assemble the 1200 food box meals weekly. They teach the four daily Bible studies, prepare and cook the four daily meals and sort through the canned goods and clothing that are donated every day.

In addition to this, over forty community churches participate alternately in the nightly evening meal and Gospel service and a dozen or so other churches and non-profit organizations partner with us to support their feeding outreaches.

The River of Life Mission offers many opportunities for volunteering and benevolence . There is always a need for drivers, Bible study teachers, office help, kitchen help, clothing help and co-laborers for the poor in general. Canned foods, clothing, cleaning supplies and paper products are also always in demand. And, of course we have normal operating and overhead expenses.

In-kind donations may be dropped off at the mission during operating hours. Checks may be made out to River of Life Mission and mailed to P. O. Box 37939, Honolulu, HI 96837.
