Portland Now, Emergency Preparedness Plan

Portland

The boundaries of Portland are: 10th Street on the east, the beginning of Bank Street on the west (across the street from Shawnee Golf Course), the Ohio River on the North and Market Street on the south.
The neighborhood which was once a town, was established in 1811. It is considered by some to be the oldest neighborhood of Louisville. It has several representations of architectural designs and is called historic by many.

Potential Threats

Since this site is for an emergency plan, then it would be reasonable to include possible threats to the safety of the residents of Portland.
The oldest section of Portland, located from 33rd to 37th and from Bank Street to the Ohio River, sets between the river, railroad tracks and switching yard, and I-64. The hazardous spills are always a threat to this neighborhood. The folks who live from about 26th Street to 30th have a rail yard very close to their homes, some homes are within a few steps. The McAlpine Locks and Dam is located at 27th Street and the River. There is also the BASF plant between 34th and 35th and Bank Street. Railroad tracks are also located east of 15th Street. Not to mention that the west runway of the airport crosses our neighborhood. Then of course you have weather related hazards and also household hazards.

What will be offered to help?

Along with the completed plan, there will also be opportunities for training and information seeking. The committee will also try to compile a registry of individuals that may need special consideration during an evacuation or other situation. But there are issues concerning this registry, such as privacy. We will offer information from agencies that are trained in the emergency/disaster area. We intend to find out where we should go and what routes to take if there is an evacuation ordered, and will look into providing transportation for those that have none. We will explore ways to communicate in case of a power failure. We want to have shelters available and the resources to run them if it is necessary. These things may never be needed but "it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it."

About our association

Introduction

This site is set up for the purpose of getting the word out about emergency preparedness planning for the Portland neighborhood. Information will also be posted as it becomes available. Once the plan is finished it will be posted on this site also.

Participants

Portland Now established a committee to create and emergency preparedness plan and prepare residents for and emergency situation. The committee currently has 15 members, and several guests have attended the two meetings that have been held. The members are residents and people who work in the neighborhood. Representatives from agencies that respond to emergency situations are willing to guide us through this process.

Mission, Vision & Goal

Our mission is to connect to, teach and help the residents of Portland so that they are aware and prepared and know that help is available. Our vision is to see that the Portland neighborhood residents, business owners, and employees who live outside of the area are enabled to help themselves and others. Our goal is to have anyone who lives or works in the neighborhood prepared for any emergency situation that may arise.
