East Meck High Traffic

Posted in: Parkview East
Were there any discussions on the traffic that comes through our neighborhood during the school year? We live near the corner of McLaughlin and Pinafore and the traffic from the high school students cutting through gets a little out of hand every year - especially the high speeds! I have contacted the police station down on Monroe Road several times in the past and never gotten much of a response. In addition, the left turn onto McLaughlin off of Monroe gets risky when school is in! Students and Parents coming from the south, have already moved into the left turn lane well before the church, much less the school. If you are sitting in the southbound left turn lane, the risk of getting hit is great. I have also called the city about this with zero response! I have asked them to put down some kind of barrier to keep incoming traffic from moving into that turn lane too quickly. Were there any discussions or are there any suggestions?

We did not get around to talking about the high school traffic but I think its high time we try to do something. Do you think it might be worth it to go to the school and try to get the principal (Mark Nixon) to make an announcement (in the school to students) when school begins?

We could try but I doubt it would help. The school cannot govern the city roads and most of the kids are not going to listen. If we could push for speed humps through Pinafore, McLaughlin and Eaglewood, we would see a change.

The problem on Monroe Road won't get better until the city installs a narrow curb or those poles (like the ones on the interstate that wont let traffic merge into another lane too soon or too late).

Just suggestions. I will be glad to go to the school but I have called there in the past as well as the police non-emergency. Neither have been a big help.

I called the city DOT a couple of years ago about this problem and was brushed aside. It seems that the only neighborhoods that can get traffic restrictions to keep through traffic out are those with influential home owners. I requested that the city not allow any right turns from Monroe Road North onto Pineborough, McLaughlin or Pinafore during school arrival time. This would still allow neighborhood residents to turn into the neighborhood at Eaglewood but would eliminate the traffic coming off of Monroe into the neighborhood and driving up Eaglewood to the school. It is impossible for me to get out of my driveway in the morning because the cars are waiting all the way down Eaglewood and the inconsiderate students will not let us out. I think that if enough of us contacted the city to complain, we would get some action.
