I have been getting a lot of phone calls from people that are still confused about the Diley Road Project and how Pickerington got here. Because of these calls, I thought it would be a good idea to write again about the history of Diley Road. Specifically, about the so called 2001 ordinance that supposedly designated Diley Road as a 5-Lane Urban Connector.
The ordinance that people are talking about is ordinance #2001-97, voted upon in 2001, that adopted a new Local Transportation Improvement Plan. In this plan Diley Road was listed with 5 lanes. However, this plan also listed some other ideas, such as:
Refugee Road from the Franklin County line east to the Violet Township line. Widen to 5 lanes from Franklin County Line to S.R. 256. Widen to 5 lanes from S.R. 256 to Allen Road/Ault Road Intersection. Widen to 3 lanes east of intersection.
Allen Road from U.S. 33 North to S.R. 204, widen to 5 lanes from U.S. 33 to Stemen Road, extend 5 lane section North to realigned Pickerington Road. Widen Pickerington Road to 5 lanes to S.R. 204.
Long Road from Diley Road west a distance of approximately 2.0+ miles. Widen to 3 lanes.
Taylor Road from U.S. 40 south to S.R. 204 including extension and grade seperation at I-70. Widen to 3 lanes.
Ault Road from S.R. 204 to Refugee Road including extension to Refugee Road. Widen to 3 lanes.
Hill Road/S.R. 256 Connector Safety Upgrade.
As you can see from this list, the Traffic Improvement Plan contained a lot of ideas. It even included areas that are not even part of the City of Pickerington!
How could this ordinance place such designation upon areas that are not part of the City? Because this Transportation Improvement Plan was just that a PLAN. It did nothing to change any of the listed roads!
If you look close at this list you will see the Hill Road/S.R. 256 Connector. Yep, the same project that Mayor Shaver has stated ''will never be completed while he is in office!''
Now if the City (or the Mayor) can decide not to follow through with an item on the Traffic Improvement Plan, why must we widen Diley Road to 5 lanes? Furthermore, if we keep following the plan to the letter, it looks like Pickerington will become the 3 & 5 lane road capital of OHIO!
There are several council members trying to state that the prior administration changed the designation of Diley Road to 5 lanes. If this is true, then why did council need to vote again on the project?
Thank you,
Bill Wright
