Pickerington Area Taxpayers Alliance

What now more welfare for Violet

Posted in: PATA
Now that the .5% sales tax has failed what happens now? Is this going to be the same old crap just another day? As we have been reading on this web site there was opposition to increasing the county sales tax. It appears there was much more opposition in the county than indicated on this web site in the last week or so.

For those that think that defeating this sales tax increase was competing for tax dollars against a possible Pickerington School bond issue in May then maybe you should have thought that through a little more.

As has been expressed earlier, the Taj Mahal at the corner of Refugee and Pickerington Roads still irritates many in the city. Granted the money has already been spent to build the temple. However each year the tax payers of the entire district must pay that bond down that was taken out to build these facilities. For those that say forget it and get on with our lives that isn't so easy when you are paying for someone else's school and facilities and you get no rewards for your hard work.

This is a huge tax burden on a section of the school district that has less financial affluence that those enjoying the overbuilt facilities.

It will be interesting to find out if the unincorporated areas of Violet Township voted against the .5% sale tax increase. It is also reported that the unincorporated areas of the community are now home rule. Police protection is now the responsibly of Violet Township. Or will this be the same old crap of the more well to do areas of the community relying on the less to do in funding their police protection? The city of Pickerington has their own police department.

Now will we be asked to support a township constable and his police department? Terry Dunlap indicated that would be coming next in his article in the paper.

DON'T ASKED ME TO FUND YOUR POLICE PROTECTION.

It is time, the township residents start carrying their own weight in this community.

We're ALL Overburdened

Residents of the City of Pickerington do not pay more than their share of the money for North and Lakeview. Since each homeowner is assessed at the same millage rate, what differs is the value of the home. Since there are many more homes in Violet Twp. than in the City of Pickerington, it is the residents of Violet Twp. who pay more in real dollars than those in the city, as well as a proportionally larger amount because of those same numbers.

The defeated sales tax was noy in competition with a May school bond levy. Had the sales tax levy passed, at least a portion of the tax would have been paid by visitors to the county who purchased taxable items. The entire cost of the bond issue is the responsibility of the PLSD only.
The city still subsidzes the Twp

Here again the very thing that has been brought out is this elitist attitude of the unincorporated township residents living in the North District. Just read what you just said.

''We live in bigger homes and we pay more real estate taxes so we deserve to have better school facilities for our children.''

Unless you live in a house worth well over $900,000 and you only have one child in school then your family is being subsidized by the rest of the district's taxpayers.

You claim to be over burdened in the Township. Do you use the City Parks? Tell me who pays for them? Do you use the County Sheriff's department for your personal protection and who patrols your township neighborhoods? Tell me who pays for them?

Yes this failure of the sales taxes will influence my vote for a school levy because every time there is talk of a merger to share the load the first issue brought up is the 1% city income tax. We also have 5.5 Mill police levy. We have our own police force. In addition we must subsidize the township by paying county property tax to support the sheriff's department and we get little or no benefit from it.

Something is unfair here.
