REGULAR MEETING
7:30 P.M.

Mrs. Darby stated there was a bad accident near Diley Road and Long Road, and there have been comments that they did not see the stop sign. She stated you cannot see the stop sign if there is a large vehicle or truck or something, and she would like to see something done to let people know there is a stop sign ahead. Mr. Hackworth stated discussion regarding the stop signs on Diley Road is on the Safety Committee agenda for their meeting on September 13th.

Diley Road, Love IT or Leave IT by Michael Sabatino

The Shaver Administration position of widening to 5 lanes is professed by Mayor Shaver and supported by City Council members Riggs, Hackworth, Wisniewski, and O'Brien. The position that we do not need 5 lanes at this time is made by city Council member Sabatino, and supported by Council member Wright. The final vote was Riggs, Hackworth, Wisniewski, and O'Brien for 5 lanes, Sabatino & Wright opposed to 5 lanes, with Parker abstaining.

The spoken opposition from the citizenry were mainly Diley Road residents whose lifestyle, safety, and many other factors are directly impacted by the 5 lanes. The spoken proponents were mainly Shaver affiliated people who spoke in favor of his positions publicly in the past. I for one do not have any trouble defining whose comments were genuine and whose comments may have been either solicited and or encouraged to support a position that needed some help. This could be called '' The Shaver Spin Cycle ''. You may be hearing that term in the future on some other topics.

Stopped in traffic

This accident closed Diley Road for at least two hours. Now they don't want to expand the road to five lanes but they only want to put up a warning stop sign.

I feel like the smartest guy in the world. That is only relative.

Sabatino, Wright?

I guess I've lost a little track of what's been going on with the Diley thing, but I thought somebody finally written to the paper and outlined some of the history on this issue. How can anyone allied with the Gray, Hughes, Bushman, Parker, Postage...(pick your favorite street or park name) be critical of the plans regarding Diley. That includes both Wright and Sabatino.

Look over the old posting and documents on this site, and you'll see that the folks now held responsible for the widening of Diley road were actively fighting against the high density residential development in the area. Hackworth had several petitions that I signed refused. There were crowds at every council meeting. I think you might even find some postings that outline some profit that city employees made on land options in that area, once they were rezoned to allow twice as many homes. No problem though, because our then law director (now federal inmate) said it was 'Ok'.

Riggs, Wiesnieski, Hackworth, Shaver were all fighting against that development. They were not successful, even after the landslide referrendums, because they were not a majority. They worked to become one, and subsequently inhereted responsiblity for the problems created by the previous administrations. Don't believe me...the facts are in the record, and it runs all down the left side of your screen.

By the way, I lived near Diley, and I moved. I did that because it was quite clear that road would eventually be widened. If you live there, and you're fighting against this, I'd do the same, but it's not in the overall best interest of the community, and that road will be five lanes. The city won't pay for three, and if it stay's two lanes, you'll have to find a job in your subdivision because you won't be able to get out. Again, as tempting as it is to blame them, it's not the current council's fault!

The traffic will come regardless

I agree that whether Diley is 2 lanes or 5, we will have increased traffic & congestion. We have the same problem with Refugee from Gender to 256 & Tussing from Brice to 256. One only needs to drive these areas & see all the new residential construction which was approved by previous city administrations. Multiply the number of these lots x 2 or 3 vehicles & add it to the traffic jams we already have. Most of the current council tried to limit this rampant residential growth. It is unfair to now blame them for the Diley expansion. If we have any hope of commercial or industrial growth, we need adequate roads to move large volumes of traffic. Otherwise we can change our city's name to Traffic Jam, Ohio.
