Pickerington Area Taxpayers Alliance

New Executive Committee ??

2 Republican Parties

Based on what I've read on this website and in the local papers, it seems as if we have a 2 party system of Republicans here in Fairfield County - the Brian Fox party and the CURE party.

Used to be...

I have talked to a number of long-time county residents, and they remember when (20 or more years ago) the voter registration rolls in Fairfield County were overwhelmingly Democratic, especially in the Lancaster area.
Things have changed

The make up of the Fairfield County politics was mainly democrats in 1980. When Ronald Reagan was elected he had long coattails here in the county. His election carried out most of the county wide Democrats.

In addition to Reagan the inter city of Columbus was having difficulty attracting Republicans because the Columbus City Schools were busing the students. Many fled to the surrounding counties to avoid the hassle of their child being bussed across the county and not near their home. Busing also separated families and parents from their children. If you had more than one child in school you could find that they attended different schools on different sides of the county. This lead to less parent involvement in the schools and those with means fled.

The Democrats also lost out on a large political base when the Anchor Hocking Plant began to have problems. Many of the Lancaster industries were union and once that industry started leaving town so did the Democratic base. I think I saw on this web site that there were only 3 Democratic central committee representatives from the 32 Pickerington area precincts.

What has happened with CURE in Fairfield County was a self cleansing of the party. Normally in a two party system when the two parties are near equal in support they tend to keep each other in line. With the Republicans being so dominate in the county they were high jacked by group with strong special interest influence and campaign contributions.

There are many new Republican central committee reps now and I am sure the party will take a turn to the good. Clearly they must return to their values of ethics and good government. It is terribly embarrassing for the party to have a Judge and a Sheriff sitting in Jail. Both claim to be innocence.

I think the real power of any party is the strength of the root party members that vote. If they get complacent they get what they get. It should be a wake up call to everyone that votes here in Fairfield County. You can make a difference if you demand good candidates with ethics and honesty and accept nothing less.
