OAKDALE
The city of Oakdale was the first true Grand Boulevard suburb. Grand Boulevard later was renamed Southern Parkway. It was begun in 1898 by an investment company headed by R. T. Coleman and S. S. Bush. During the two decades which followed Oakdale's incorporation in 1904,
numerous other tracts, including Wyandotte, were subdivided and developed. The whole area was annexed by Louisville in 1922 after a prolonged legal fight which was taken to the US Supreme Court. The Court would not consider the case
because it was not a constitutional issue.
We have serious drainage problems in the entire area and particularly in Wyandotte Park. We’ve been told the park’s drainage system needs a major overhaul, but we have not been successful to get other than bandaid corrections made. We do not intend to let up our crusade to get that park back to being more people friendly. It is one of the most used parks in the city and deserves to be improved.
The area comprising our neighborhood was once known as Wyandotte, later as Oakdale/Wyandotte and now simply as Oakdale. We have not been very successful in getting the old city maps changed to show our proper name. If you look at a map and cannot find Oakdale, just look for Wyandotte. We will get the maps changed some day because we do not give up. (But we will not go all the way to the US Supreme Court).
We enjoy our little piece of Louisville and are pledged to make it a better place in which to live and raise a family. We have work to do; Semple school must be improved, drainage must
be improved, we need cross-town public transportation, etc.
There is enough to do to keep our association busy for quite a while.
We residents still are protective of the environment and the encroachment of less than desirable businesses into our neighborhood. We do not want more girlie bars, etc., located
here.
We could not prevent the widening of I-264, but we were successful in having a sound barrier erected even though it was not in the original highway plans. We fought the proposed closing Eastern Parkway at Third Street - U of L would have liked a cul-de-sac at that intersection. We did not agree that a new Central Parkway would give us enough east-west roadways. Eastern Parkway is still open, but we are keeping an eye on it.
Oakdale Neighborhood Association was in the forefront of the fight to have utility lines placed underground when Central Avenue was rebuilt. The original plans called for the
transmission wires merely to be moved to the north side of Central Avenue. This was a very interesting fight, but the neighborhood associations insisted it was very shortsighted to
rebuild a roadway that will be featured on worldwide TV every year and have ugly transmission lines running along the right of way. We won.
Oakdale Neighborhoos Association meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Gym at Southside Baptist Church, 804 Camden Avenue. You are welcome to visit and we hope you will become a member. However, we welcome ALL visitors. For additional information contact Ellen O'Leary, 363-3472.
