Working To Beautify Our Neighborhood NCPCA Neighborhood Appearan

May 23, 2003

Our committee was started last fall in response to the Action Plan presented by the Housing and Neighborhood Development Services with the City and County of Denver. As neighborhood was appearance was determined to be a critical issue for our community, we have created this committee to help address our specific needs.
Neighborhood Clean-up
After several meetings, we have planned our first event! We are hosting three neighborhood clean-ups this summer on the following Saturdays from 9am to 12pm: June 14, July 19 and August 23.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS, so please contact Pastor Loren Richmond at 303-421-9329 to sign-up for one of these events. We have support from the City ?“Keep Denver Beautiful?” program to provide supplies and through the Focus Neighborhood Initiative, we have obtained funding for refreshments and incentives for volunteers. More information will be sent out in a community mailing in June. We look forward to seeing you this summer!
Our clean-ups will be focused around Columbine & Barrett Schools, the East Denver YMCA and the 28th. Avenue Commercial District. These are all areas that will see major improvements over the next year.
Redesigned Playgrounds
Two students from the University of Colorado at Denver have redesigned the playgrounds at Barrett & Columbine Elementary Schools and they expect these projects to break ground sometime this fall.
Sidewalk Repair
There are also about 5 blocks in our community that have submitted applications for new sidewalks through the ?“Block Beautification Program.?” The deadline has been extended and as a Focus Neighborhood, we have the City?’s attention! So, if the sidewalks on your block are in a state of disrepair, please contact Emily Bustos at 720-913-1549 to receive and submit an application.
New People Needed
Unfortunately, there are members of our committee that will be moving or are unable to participate in the future due to their health. As chair person, I am also moving this summer and hope that we can find new people to join our committee! We meet once a month and are each assigned to one task to look after for our community. Please call me at 388-4654 if you are interested in joining. Our next meeting is MONDAY, JUNE 9 at 6:30pm at the fire station (Martin Luther King & Steele). We hope to see some new faces!
