In Iran, Arming for Armageddon

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (By Saman Aqvami -- Associated Press)

By Charles Krauthammer
Friday, December 16, 2005

Lest you get carried away with today's good news from Iraq, consider what's
happening next door in Iran. The wild pronouncements of the new Iranian
president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have gotten sporadic press ever since he called
for Israel to be wiped off the map. He subsequently amended himself to say that
Israel should simply be extirpated from the Middle East map and moved to some
German or Austrian province. Perhaps near the site of an old extermination camp?

Except that there were no such camps, indeed no Holocaust at all, says
Ahmadinejad. Nothing but "myth," a "legend" that was "fabricated . . . under the
name 'Massacre of the Jews.' " This brought the usual reaction from European and
American officials, who, with Churchillian rage and power, called these
statements unacceptable. That something serious might accrue to Iran for this --
say, expulsion from the United Nations for violating its most basic principle by
advocating the outright eradication of a member state -- is, of course, out of
the question.

To be sure, Holocaust denial and calls for Israel's destruction are
commonplace in the Middle East. They can be seen every day on Hezbollah TV, in
Syrian media, in Egyptian editorials appearing in semiofficial newspapers. But
none of these aspiring mass murderers are on the verge of acquiring nuclear
weapons that could do in one afternoon what it took Hitler six years to do:
destroy an entire Jewish civilization and extinguish 6 million souls.

Everyone knows where Iran's nuclear weapons will be aimed. Everyone knows
they will be put on Shahab rockets, which have been modified so that they can
reach Israel. And everyone knows that if the button is ever pushed, it will be
the end of Israel.

But it gets worse. The president of a country about to go nuclear is a
confirmed believer in the coming apocalypse. Like Judaism and Christianity,
Shiite Islam has its own version of the messianic return -- the reappearance of
the Twelfth Imam. The more devout believers in Iran pray at the Jamkaran mosque,
which houses a well from which, some believe, he will emerge.

When Ahmadinejad unexpectedly won the presidential elections, he immediately
gave $17 million of government funds to the shrine. Last month Ahmadinejad said
publicly that the main mission of the Islamic Revolution is to pave the way for
the reappearance of the Twelfth Imam.

And as in some versions of fundamentalist Christianity, the second coming
will be accompanied by the usual trials and tribulations, death and destruction.
Iranian journalist Hossein Bastani reported Ahmadinejad saying in official
meetings that the hidden imam will reappear in two years.

So a Holocaust-denying, virulently anti-Semitic, aspiring genocidist, on the
verge of acquiring weapons of the apocalypse, believes that the end is not only
near but nearer than the next American presidential election. (Pity the
Democrats. They cannot catch a break.) This kind of man would have, to put it
gently, less inhibition about starting Armageddon than a normal person. Indeed,
with millennial bliss pending, he would have positive incentive to, as they say
in Jewish eschatology, hasten the end.

To be sure, there are such madmen among the other monotheisms. The Temple
Mount Faithful in Israel would like the al-Aqsa mosque on Jerusalem's Temple
Mount destroyed to make way for the third Jewish Temple and the messianic era.
The difference with Iran, however, is that there are all of about 50 of these
nuts in Israel, and none of them is president.

The closest we've come to a messianically inclined leader in America was a
secretary of the interior who 24 years ago, when asked about his stewardship of
the environment, told Congress: "I do not know how many future generations we
can count on before the Lord returns; whatever it is we have to manage with a
skill to leave the resources needed for future generations." But James Watt's
domain was the forest, and his weapon of choice was the chainsaw. He was not in
charge of nuclear weapons to be placed on missiles that are paraded through the
streets with, literally, Israel's name on them. (They are adorned with banners
reading "Israel must be wiped off the map.") It gets worse. After his U.N.
speech in September, Ahmadinejad was caught on videotape telling a cleric that
during the speech an aura, a halo, appeared around his head right on the podium
of the General Assembly. "I felt the atmosphere suddenly change. And for those
27 or 28 minutes, the leaders of the world did not blink. . . . It seemed as if
a hand was holding them there, and it opened their eyes to receive the message
from the Islamic Republic."

Negotiations to deny this certifiable lunatic genocidal weapons have been
going nowhere. Everyone knows they will go nowhere. And no one will do anything
about it.

first of, we started f-ing with them in the 50's, the CIA over threw their elected government and installed the shah a dictator.

Coup 53 of Iran is the CIA's (Central Intelligence Agency) first successful overthrow of a foreign government. ( where is the constitutional authority)

But a copy of the agency's secret history of the coup has surfaced, revealing the inner workings of a plot that set the stage for the Islamic revolution in 1979, and for a generation of anti-American hatred in one of the Middle East's most powerful countries. The document, which remains classified, discloses the pivotal role British intelligence officials played in initiating and planning the coup, and it shows that Washington and London shared an interest in maintaining the West's control over Iranian oil.

secondly, where we getting the money to start another war( debt is one of the reasons our economy is dying ) plus how many americans are you willing to send to their death!!!! lastly, we were lied to about iraq( don't care if it was bush or the intelligent community that spread lies about iraq, where are the WMDs and the BIOlogical trucks they show on the news !!!!!!! huh!!!) and now you want to take a chance and believe we need to start a third war, show me some truth and not more propaganda from the war mongers and their propaganda machine!!!!

and what about this-  News that Russia will load nuclear fuel rods into an Iranian reactor has touched off a countdown to a point of no return, a deadline by which Israel would have to launch an attack on Iran's Bushehr reactor before it becomes effectively "immune" to any assault, says former Bush administration U.N. Ambassador John R. Bolton.

Once the fuel rods are loaded, Bolton told Fox News on Friday afternoon, "it makes it essentially immune from attack by Israel. Because once the rods are in the reactor an attack on the reactor risks spreading radiation in the air, and perhaps into the water of the Persian Gulf."

RUSSIA THREATENS NUKE STRIKE

Top-ranking Russian military figure Says America had better watch out

rss202

By Mark Glenn

Recent statements coming from one of Russia’s highest-ranking military commanders indicate that America and Israel plan to go ahead with war on Iran despite the release of the National Intelligence Estimate late last year.

Russia’s military chief of staff General Yuri Baluyevsky threatened the use of nuclear weapons in case of a major threat. He said that, although they have no plans of attacking anyone, they nevertheless “consider it necessary for everyone around the world community to clearly understand, that to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its allies, military forces will be used, including, preventively, the use of nuclear weapons.”

His statements (which can only have been made in concert with the overall policies established by his boss President Vladimir Putin) come a week after George Bush’s visit to the Persian Gulf, in which he attempted to rally the nations in that region around U.S. and Israeli plans of “confronting Iran’s nuclear program before it is too late.”

Baluyevsky’s statement, despite the stark and apocalyptic themes pervading it, comes as no surprise. Over the course of the past year, Russia has taken on an increasingly aggressive defensive posture with regard to the West as a result of what it sees as an overall plan of encircling her with NATO forces that threaten her existence.

Russia has resumed long-range bomber patrols (halted with the fall of the Soviet Union), sometimes coming within inches of NATO airspace. She has pulled out of several treaties with the West limiting the size of Russian military forces on Europe’s eastern flank. Incensed at the U.S. plan of using new NATO member nations in Eastern Europe as a staging area for missile defense systems (said to be a necessary defense against Iran), Russia has developed and successfully test fired new missiles—both land- and sea-launched. Russia claims they are sophisticated enough to trump any U.S. missile shield.

Beginning in December (after the release of the NIE), Russia began delivering the nuclear fuel supplies promised to Iran according to their agreement. As of this moment, four shipments have been made totaling 45 tons of the estimated 80 tons necessary for the Bushehr facility to begin refinement.

Israel is furious, as evidenced by Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni’s recent meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov where she called the fuel deliveries “inconceivable.”

What is of particular importance in General Baluyevsky’s statement is his mention of “defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of, not just Russia, but her “allies” as well. Russia has not, as of this moment, signed formal mutual defense agreements with nations such as Iran and Syria.

Both are on Israel and America’s list of countries targeted for destruction. Both are important trading partners occupying Russia’s peripheries and therefore a first-line defense of Russian territory.

Throughout this nightmare in the Middle East, Russia has demonstrated a sane and rational character. By contrast, Israel and the United States under the administration of George Bush, have been irrational and unpredictable. Iraq and Afghanistan are unmitigated disasters and the fact that neither the U.S. nor Israel has learned from these disasters proves they are dangerous to all nations seen as uncooperative in the drive for U.S. and Israeli world hegemony.

Indeed, Putin recently compared Bush to a “maniac running around threatening everyone with a razor.”
and what about this----

The U.S. is literally funding Iranian nuclear capabilities.

As CNN reports, the U.S. state department has given millions of dollars to two Russian institutes which, in turn, are directly helping to ramp up Iran's nuke capacity at Bushehr and other facilities.

This is especially ironic given that the U.S. has accused Iran of producing fuel for nuclear weapons at Bushehr.

Here's the CNN report:---
This is especially ironic given that the U.S. has accused Iran of producing fuel for nuclear weapons at Bushehr.

It's only ironic if you think that current day politicians, consider their HONOUR and INTEGRITY to be a priority value; as opposed to POWER (power: defined as in the military and propaganda force at their disposal; not as in 'inner power' of INTEGRITY AND HONOUR)

As long as the old guard gets their resources, it's all good. And in the end, it's all about power. The people who really run this planet know that natural resources (oil, water, coltan, cobalt, etc.) are the key. The "War on Terror" is just a front for a geo-strategic resource grab on a massive scale.

Simplistically, in my opinion, they prefer an ignorant populace of citizens, easy to manipulate -- or herd like sheep -- using divide and conquer.

Off the cuff there is evidence for US elite funding of the Vietcong via Russia during Vietnam War, massive evidence for providing Saddam with biological warfare WMD, by US elite (Thatcher, Bush, White House et al) prior to bombing him twice for possession of the WMD, they sold him!

Venture back to prior to Pearl Harbour, the US energy sanctions against Japan; with the intention of provoking Japan to attack; so that the US could enter WWII (not to mention the prior knowledge of the details of the attack, and suppression of that information).

Just a few examples, there are many, many more.

Sit in any courtroom for a few days, and listen to the crimes that people commit, and generally the motives are a combination of MONEY, POWER and REVENGE.

Nobody will disagree with this; however it is amazing how they somehow think that the elite -- particularly politicians and corporate predator elite -- are not motivated to commit massive crimes, for MONEY, POWER and REVENGE.

Involvement in the WAR BUSINESS amounts to (i) MILLIONS, FOR SOME BILLIONS OF $$$$; (ii) POWER (iii) provides the opportunity for spectacular phallic 'shock' and 'awe' REVENGE...

The "Wipe Israel Off The Map" Hoax
What Ahmadinejad really said and why this broken record is just another ad slogan for war

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
Friday, January 26, 2007

Barely a day goes by that one can avoid reading or hearing yet another Israeli, American or British warhawk regurgitate the broken record that Iran's President Ahmadinejad threatened to "wipe Israel off the map," framed in the ridiculous context that Israelis are being targeted for a second holocaust. This baseless rallying call for conflict holds about as much credibility as Dick Cheney's assertion that Saddam Hussein was planning to light up American skies with mushroom clouds.

Today it's the turn of would-be future British Prime Minister David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, who repeated the "wipe Israel off he map" fraud in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, using it to qualify his refusal to rule out a military strike on Iran under a Tory government.

Did Ahmadinejad really threaten to "wipe Israel off the map" or is this phrase just another jingoistic brand slogan for selling the next war in the Middle East?

The devil is in the detail, wiping Israel off the map suggests a physical genocidal assault, a literal population relocation or elimination akin to what the Nazis did. According to numerous different translations, Ahmadinejad never used the word "map," instead his statement was in the context of time and applied to the Zionist regime occupying Jerusalem. Ahmadinejad was expressing his future hope that the Zionist regime in Israel would fall, not that Iran was going to physically annex the country and its population.

To claim Ahmadinejad has issued a rallying cry to ethnically cleanse Israel is akin to saying that Churchill wanted to murder all Germans when he stated his desire to crush the Nazis. This is about the demise of a corrupt occupying power, not the deaths of millions of innocent people.

The Guardian's Jonathan Steele cites four different translations, from professors to the BBC to the New York Times and even pro-Israel news outlets, in none of those translations is the word "map" used. The closest translation to what the Iranian President actually said is, "The regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time," or a narrow relative thereof. In no version is the word "map" used or a context of mass genocide or hostile military action even hinted at.

The acceptance of the word "map" seemingly originated with the New York Times, who later had to back away from this false translation. The BBC also wrongly used the word and, in comments to Steele, later accepted their mistake but refused to issue a retraction.

"The fact that he compared his desired option - the elimination of "the regime occupying Jerusalem" - with the fall of the Shah's regime in Iran makes it crystal clear that he is talking about regime change, not the end of Israel. As a schoolboy opponent of the Shah in the 1970's he surely did not favor Iran's removal from the page of time. He just wanted the Shah out," writes Steele.

"It's important to note that the "quote" in question was itself a quote, writes Arash Norouzi, "they are the words of the late Ayatollah Khomeini, the father of the Islamic Revolution. Although he quoted Khomeini to affirm his own position on Zionism, the actual words belong to Khomeini and not Ahmadinejad. Thus, Ahmadinejad has essentially been credited (or blamed) for a quote that is not only unoriginal, but represents a viewpoint already in place well before he ever took office."

Professor Juan Cole concurs, arguing, "Now, some might say, "So he didn't say, 'wipe off the map,' he said 'erase from the page.' What's the difference? Anyway he's saying he wants to get rid of Israel. Ahmadinejad was not making a threat, he was quoting a saying of Khomeini and urging that pro-Palestinian activists in Iran not give up hope -- that the occupation of Jerusalem was no more a continued inevitability than had been the hegemony of the Shah's government. Whatever this quotation from a decades-old speech of Khomeini may have meant, Ahmadinejad did not say that 'Israel must be wiped off the map' with the implication that phrase has of Nazi-style extermination of a people. He said that the occupation regime over Jerusalem must be erased from the page of time."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's consider for a moment that Ahmadinejad really does wish to initiate a nuclear war on Israel, is this feasible? It would be like Paris Hilton picking a fight with Mike Tyson. The CIA's own estimates put Iran five to ten years away from being able to produce one nuclear bomb even if they were in the planning stages now, which is highly unlikely given that international inspectors have found no evidence of such a program and CIA satellite imagery also shows no proof of nuclear arms. Contrast this to an Israeli arsenal of anything up to 200 launch ready nukes allied to the might of the U.S. which has nearly 6,000 active warheads not to mention so-called "mini-nukes."

While it can be reasonably argued that Iran is seeking a nuclear weapon at some point in the future, to then claim that this means Ahmadinejad wishes to enact a second holocaust is an unfathomable leap of logic. The real reason for any nation in that region trying to acquire a nuclear weapon is for self defense, because they are surrounded by other hostile powers that already have the bomb.

Returning to the "wipe Israel off the map hoax," loathe are we to forget another of the commercial jingles concocted for hoodwinking Americans into attacking a certain other Middle Eastern country - "he used weapons of mass destruction against his own people," referring of course to Saddam Hussein's alleged role in the Halabja massacre where Iraqi Kurds were gassed. In reality, as former CIA analyst Stephen Pelletiere has revealed, Halabja came as a result of a battlefield exchange between the Iranians and the Iraqis after the Kurds had sided with the Iranians and allowed them to enter the city. According to the DIA's own report at the time, the type of gas that killed the Kurds was not used by the Iraqis but was used by the Iranians. The incident was a tragedy of war, not a directed program of genocide at the behest of Saddam Hussein.

Whenever Bush administration officials and others used Halabja as a pretext for war, the mass media routinely failed to mention the DIA report, just as they have failed to provide any balance on the real meaning of Ahmadinejad's statement, despite the fact that it is completely distorted almost every day and used as a call to arms as well as a propagandistic ploy to convince western populations that dark skinned invaders are hell-bent on their wholesale destruction.
