Cats at Luthern Homes

Posted in: Muscatine

Listen to this story I heard today. At Luthern Homes they had two cats to roam around the place for the residents. One cat became very attached to a resident and spent most of it's time in her room. She treated the cat like her baby. This has been going on for about 1 1/2 years.

Some of the higher up faculty decided that they should get rid of the cat because it wasn't being shared with all the other residents. This woman is now heart broken and has been crying every since.

What kind of crap is that?!

  DF-

Is this true?  HOW DARE THEY if it is!  I have heard that Lutheran Homes is having a lot of issues with management & that they fired a "person in charge" to get back on track a month or so ago!  Many of us may be facing the decision to allow our parents to have a parent go to a home.  We hope & pray that  our parent will be cared for @ least 1/2 as much as we would.

We all have to remember that what we allow to go on in nursing homes today may very well have an impact on our families lives as well as our own.  WE ARE ALL AGING, FOLKS!  Our parent's are aging.  The world continues to change around us; technology, music, values, etc. etc.  There will be a point in our lives that others think that our thoughts & feelings are "Old Fashioned"!  Eyes will be rolled, shoulders will be shrugged, we will be dismissed & the decision will be made!   My kids have to explain my cell phone & DVD to me!  Who died & gave the faculty the right to get rid of the cat?

YellHERE'S A SOLUTION!   Talk to the family, tell them your concerns & let them know how attached mom is to the cat.  Let them decide if  "perhaps one of them could take on the kitty & bring it to mom when they visit?"

Maybe just maybe this is not the whole story. I suspect it isnt. Some folks are very allergic to cats, some folks just dont like them. I happen to be both allergic and franklly cant stand them. The "faculty" does have the right to decide who and what lives in the home.

I'm with you, I seriously doubt that the whole story is being told.  IF, the management of the Homes has allowed 2-3-? cats to roam for the residents, and one lady got attached to one of them, then, what's the gripe, KNOWING, that some people ARE allergic to them, AND, some people just CAN'T stand them, BUT, I do have to make a sideline statement to this.  I have worked in a situation ALL my life, AND, I will tell you, that a nursing home is a death warrant for many of a resident!  There are a LOT of people that get put into a home, and they NEVER see ANY of their relatives AFTER that moment (not ALL, BUT, several people)!   SO, IF, a person has a cat to be attached to, that MAY add some time to her life.  My suggestion is this:  I would HOPE, that the Lutheran Homes is at LEAST gov erened by the Lutheran Church!  IF it is, I would start with that, OR, the board of governors that oversee the Lutheran Homes!  SOMEBODY has to hire and fire the General Manager of the homes.  Ask one of the Nurses Aids, when you go down there next, where they get their paycheck from.  That'll be a start.  BEST of Luck Drunkenfool (please pass these comments on, to whom ever you heard this from).  Tom Milder.
