Has anyone recently driven 2nd St into the downtown coming down the hill past the bridge?  The intersection of 2nd and Oak (which was closed for the last couple of weeks for construction) is now open.  However, if you look to the right onto Oak St there is no pavement it is dirt.  No one can drive on it.  The left side has barracades up so no one can come onto 2nd St from Oak St in either direction. Yet there is a stop sign there for the traffic on 2nd St to stop when there is no way any traffic can be coming off of Oak St.  Can anyone explain this to me?  Why do we need a stop sign there?  I am baffled.  This strikes me as so aburd.  Welcome to Muscatine.

Yes, I have driven that stretch several times and wondered the very same thing. Every time I pull up to that stop sign , I look at that and say to myself "self, why as we stopping here?". I'm positive if one just drove on thru it one would find a police escort the rest of the way. Perhaps they want us to stop and look at the workers on the heavy equipment? Any city fathers on here that can explain?

I am just guessing but the stop sign was probably put up to keep the speed of the traffic down. Right or wrong it is there so we have to live with it until the city decides to remove or change it.

I agree that it sure does not look right to me.

Second Street reopened Wednesday with one-way traffic in each direction. A stop sign was placed near the HON oak laminate plant to help control traffic while sewer separation work continues, said project manager Denny Kistenmacher. He said normal two-way traffic in all four lanes will resume soon. The sewer project that began in April is expected to be completed next month, about seven months ahead of schedule.

i copied this out of the Journal.  By looking at the picture I wonder if it is there to help get semi's out of the dock area.  I have not been  by there myself, I am trying avoid it myself.
