  • Respect-O-Meter: Respected Neighbor

I just want your thoughts on something.  I've been married so long, I barely remember dating, but I have a daughter (almost 17).  This evening, she had a date with a boy we've never met.  I told her she wouldn't be going anywhere unless the boy came to the door to get her and we met him.  (we know a lot about him, and I know he's a good kid, but still....).  She looked horrified, and said "Mom, nobody does that anymore!".   I just looked at her, smiled, and said "well they do in THIS house".

Thoughts?

I don't think the kids these days are taught that type of respect. I know that when my son is older he will learn that he must show the girl's family great respect as well as her. He will not just pull up and honk, he will go to the door, introduce himself to her parents, hold doors open for her and all that good stuff, and will have her home by her curfew. He will be taught that if he can't show her parents respect as well, then he really doesn't respect her (it is kind of a package deal) and if he can't then he doesn't deserve her.

That is just my opinion. I think that as parents we all have slacked on this sort of thing and it needs to be reinforced. If you show your children to fight and be disrespectful then they will, if you show them respect then they to will show others respect as well.

Just my thoughts.

Good job, Lil!!

I'm in my 20's and my husband always came to the door to get me when we were dating.  Never once tried to pull up and honk.  I do believe that it all depends on the parents and how the boy is raised.  If they are raised with respect then they will share that respect with others.  So nope I don't think you were out of line with your daughter.  Let her know that she deserves respect from any boy she  may choose to date.
