Everyone that replied to this post was correct & all had a point.  As a parent, we should have the right to ok what our children wear & allow them the freedom to make choices.

Nedl, unfortunately & sadly, we do not live in the world you spoke of in your Catholic School days.  Cry  I have 2 adult children.  My husband & I were PTO presidents, totally involved & welcomed at their schools back in the mid 80's through the 90's.  I now have a teen son & 2 elementary grandchildren.  I'm still involved, but when I go to their schools, I know that I need to stand @ the door, push a button & wait for approval to enter.  It's disconcerting, but if it keeps my babies safe, I'm all for it.

Nedl, we raised 2 girls first.  Girls fight w/ their tongues,  & it was a different world then.   I've learned boys do things differently! (You made me mad; scuffle; ok, done!).  There was a situation that our son was being targeted by a bully in 4th grade.  My husband told him to kick his A**....  You can't today!  It's a different world.

The pendelum has gone way over the top, I agree!  You surf the net more than I do & you see some of the sick things our kids think our funny.  They are being desensitized.  We have our morals, brains & experience to deal w/ the world.  They don't.  My 15 yr. old son is still not allowed to watch R rated movies.

That child should NEVER have been given a detention.  The remedy should have been to ask him to turn the shirt inside out, parents called & situation explained & this might have gone away w/ communication on both sides.  Getting angry doesn't solve it.  Communication might?
