According to a story that appeared in the OC Register, a rainbow flag -- the symbol of LGBT solidarity -- will fly over the Santa Ana City Hall for five weeks beginning on Harvey Milk Day (May 22). The motion, proposed by Councilman Sal Tinajero, was passed by a 4-3 vote at the last City Council meeting.
While all councilmembers supported the spirit of the flying of the flag, concern was raised that a possible precendent was being set and that other groups would be looking for the same type of visible representation. To address that concern, the council also passed an amendment by Councilwoman Michelle Martinez to develop a policy for flying other flags in front of City Hall on a limited basis. No time frame was set for developing the policy.
