Happy Earth Month!! This month, we are celebrating the efforts of volunteers like you who help protect our waterways and make a lasting impact in our community! Check out all the fun ways you can get involved this month!
Highlights from Creek Week 2026!
We want to give a HUGE THANK YOU to every volunteer who devoted their time and energy to keeping our waterways clean and to all the participants who came out to learn more about our creeks! You helped divert over 12,000 pounds of trash from our waterways, cared for 383 native trees in floodplains, marked 28storm drains, and mapped over 70 trees!
Volunteer Spotlight!
We’re highlighting Destin V. and the Lake Norman Charter High School Key Club as April’s volunteer of the month! Some of you had the pleasure of meeting Destin at The Big Spring Clean at Toby Creek Greenway. Destin did a wonderful job serving as a site captain and helping volunteers throughout the event! With the help of fellow students and volunteers, Destin removed 12 tires from Toby Creek! Thank you so much for all your hard work!!
Get ready, get set, and GO mark storm drains and compete in our Earth Month Storm Drain Marking Competition! This competition will take place April 18–25, 2026! Groups from across Mecklenburg County will compete to help us reach our goal of marking every storm drain in the County. Teams earn a point for each storm drain marked, with prizes awarded to the top teams in each division (Under 18 and Over 18). Teams can include up to four people, and every member of the winning team will receive a prize.
Did you know that you can help us monitor the health of a stream near you? There are approximately 3,000 miles of streams in Mecklenburg County! We have an extensive surface water quality monitoring program, but we need your help monitoring this vast network of streams. TheStreamside Assessment and Chemical Monitoring programs allow you to test streams in your neighborhood for pH, Turbidity, Dissolved Oxygen, and Temperature, while conducting a visual assessment for pollution indicators. Learn more about chemical monitoring. This is a great opportunity to learn individually or with a neighborhood group or class. If you or a student you know is interested in this program, email us at STW-Volunteers@MeckNC.gov!
