New Life for an Old Neighbourhood

The Lincoln Terrace Neighbourhood Association (LTNA) is growing in size and energy. Meetings are providing a time to compare notes on how to maintain and renew old homes, social activities are helping neighbours meet neighbours and both are a way to share the challenges and benefits of living in a historic neighbourhood. Rather than a 'tattle on the neighbours' or 'meet for the sake of meeting' group, the LTNA is working on fixing safety and traffic issues, providing a network for information sharing (need to know the best contractors? electricians?) and helping folks know folks (a fun thing to do, as well as a crime deterrent).

The Old Part

Lincoln Terrace (LT) was designated as a Historic Preservation District in 1974. More than just a group of random old homes, LT is a part of Oklahoma history. Many of the homes were built in the 1920s by the famous builder/developer G.A. Nichols, and many have been home to the famous people of Oklahoma (Senator Robert S. Kerr and Governor Roy Turner both lived in more than one home here). The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center has converted and reconverted many of the homes as classrooms, restaurants (the Faculty House on 14th Street) and dorms. With the Harn Homestead, the Oklahoma Historical Society, the State Capitol, the Governor's Mansion and the various hospitals and medical research centers all surrounding the neighbourhood, Lincoln Terrace definitely has its link to this state. For a great deal of information about the neighbourhood and its history, please read 'Historical Homes of Lincoln Terrace,' edited by James Edwin Alexander (c) 1993, Macedon Production Company (Southwest Heritage Publications).
