Minutes

Members present: Sherri Chandler, Michael Baugh, John T. Greathouse, Ed Hammond, Paul Schuhmann, Linda Thomas, Anna Woolridge, Kevin Oechisli, Elizabeth Hatchett, Caroline Franklin, Emily C. Boone, Patricia Germany, Gail Linville, Steve Thomas, and Judy Nichols.

Guests present: Sean Walker, Jackie Schaefer, Walter Hutchins, and Joe Fischer.

Meeting began at 6:30pm. Dinner by Pizza Hut.

Speaker: Phyliss Croce - MSD.
Showed a presentation of a map of geologic time. The U.S. has 13 ecological regions. She also showed landscaping of different regions. She stated that lawn companies who spray on grass pollutes streams. Native plants have developed in their specific niche. Roots break up soil. Use leaves as compose. At MSD trees were dug up and a patio with removable furniture replaced them. Sunflowers and other flowers were used to attract birds and butterflies. She suggested start using a rain barrels to catch rainwater. Have opening with screens and drop mosquito pellets in it. Bernheim Forrest is open free from Mon. - Fri. and charges on the weekend. The Nature Center sells native seeds

She stated that a typical lawnmower pollutes as much as one car driving 200 miles in a small compact car. Plants absorb some carbon monoxide.
Steps to creating low-maintenance landscaping for you property.
Draw a landscaping map and plan. Take soil samples - contact Cooperative Extension Service at 569-2344. Start small. Kill existing vegetation by digging it out. Avoid invasive plants such as burning bush and winged euonymus. Add compost and nutrients,. Plant seeds and plants, starting with shrubs and trees. Mulch well. They have a rebate to trade in your gas power mower $100 or more if you get an electric mower. Now is the time to plant trees. Lawn Care and Cleaner Air Awards brochures are available.

Announcements:

  • Go to LCON.org and sign up on the website.
  • Mayor’s Neighborhood Summit is November 12 at 7:30am. LCON will host breakfast. Signup for a T-Shirt. If you are going to participate in the workshops you will need to pay the $10.00 registration fee.
  • The Kentucky Association of Parliamentarians is Saturday from 9:00am to 2:00pm at Executive West.
  • The next Mayor’s Community Conversation is at Eastern High School. For November it will be at Butler High School. It falls on the third Monday of each month.
  • Earrings fundraiser by Sherri is still going on. Stop by the table before you leave.
  • The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage will be opening in March 2006. You can buy a brick or block. Contact Anna Woolridge.
  • Dr. Joe Fischer from The Louisville Company LLC presented the 2006 Louisville Calendar. It is a fund raiser for non-profit organizations. You can order by the case. There are 25 in a case. You can sell the calendars for $15.00 each. Your organization receives $75.00 for each case you order. To have own cover you will have to sell a minimum of 1,000 calendars.
  • John Greathouse announced that there is going to be a new mini police substation in the South End. There will be 16 policemen there. Some of the policemen are going to Mexico to learn how to speak Spanish and Cuban.
  • Jackie Shafer present the Louisville A to Z book. This is a children’s book that highlights different neighborhoods in the Metro Louisville area. Copies are $13.95 each.
  • Walt Huchins presented copies of the 2005 Black History Calendar. Next year will be the 13th year. Also, Western Library will rededicate its’ next 100th year. A time capsule will be buried. It will be opened in 100 years.
  • Speaker for next meeting which will be on Dr. Ricky L. Jones. His topic will be: New Leadership Strategies for Grassroots Leaders." It will be at 6:00 at Western Branch Library at 10th and Chestnut Streets. Note change in location.
