In 1993, KNA was created in response to a particularly intense gang-related crime wave. Tired of helicopters flying low over head, mailboxes bashed, graffiti on every corner, drive-by shootings, car thefts and burglaries, a neighbor sent out a flyer inviting everyone to a meeting. Over 200 concerned neighbors attended and KNA was born, adopting the gecko as its totem. Although part of the neighborhood affected was known as Coronado Heights, the neighbors who came to take a stand were from Stone to 1st Avenue and Ft. Lowell to Grant, so this new common ground was called “Keeling”, after Helen Keeling Elementary School.
