IndependenceFirst was established in 1979 as a non-profit organization directed by, and for the benefit of persons with disabilities, primarily serving the four county metropolitan Milwaukee area. The majority of our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers are people with disabilities. Our agency?’s vision is for the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in every aspect of our community and commits itself toward this end. The mission of IndependenceFirst is to effectively facilitate empowerment through: education, advocacy, independent living services, and coalition building. We promote diversity and multicultural participation in our operation and services.
Some of our programs/services include: personal care services, wheelchair sports and adaptive recreation, homeownership, nursing home transition, accessibility consultation, disability awareness, assistive technology, computer recycling, computer/internet instruction, independent living skills training and more.
