2002 Strengthening Neighborhood Program Grantees

The Denver Foundation Continues to Partner with Highland

Now in its 6th year, The Denver Foundation's Strengthening Neighborhoods Program (SNP)continues its partnership with the Highland neighborhood. Providing small grants that support resident-conceived and resident-led projects from mural painting projects to community organizing efforts to multi-cultural festivals, SNP strives to work with residents to help them use the strengths and assets already present in their community to make the neighborhood a better place to live.

Below are 2002 SNP projects awarded funds to help build community in Highland:

Highland Art Showcases - $450 to plan and $2,500 to support the 2002 Art Showcases – a series of neighborhood art (display and performance-based) showcases

Vallejo Street Neighbors – $250 to plan and $3,000 to support a multi block annual summer festival - 2002 Multicultural Festival

Bryant Webster Elementary School – $500 to plan the Learning Landscape Project – a community playground/ gathering space

Shoshone Community Garden - $5,000 to support development of a community garden

Highland Hip Hop Dance Troupe - $2,530 to support a performance-oriented hip-hop dance troupe to engage neighborhood teens

West 37th Ave. Neighbors – $5,000 to support an extensive series of xeriscaped streetscapes between sidewalks and street curbs, as well as a number of street corner plots 37th Avenue

St. Dominic Parish - $1,500 to support the annual summer community festival

Highland Carriage Lot Mural - $ 475 to plan and $3,750 to support a youth-designed public mural

Neighbors of Highland - $700 to support a Neighborhood Multi Block Party around 33rd & Tejon

Highland Haunted House Tour – $3,000 to support the annual walking haunted house tour of historic buildings in Highland

Highland Dog Show - $1,500 to support the spirited 2nd annual resident/dog show

St Dominic's Church - $3,400 to sustain an ESL program

Amigos de la Academia Ana Maria Sandoval - $3,300 to purchase simultaneous translation equipment that will enable monolingual English-speaking and Spanish-speaking parents of students at the bilingual school to communicate more effectively at meetings.

SNP Grants build Community Partnerships in Highland & Sunnyside

Wonderful partnerships are being forged through residents connecting across the invisible neighborhood borders. Unique community organizing opportunities develop as Sunnyside and Highland residents work together to make a positive change in their communities.

Nayun Amaru Paynal - $500 to plan the Cesar E. Chavez Avenue name change campaign

Academia Ana Maria Sandoval CDM - $500 to plan ways to include a diversity of voices in school decision-making

YASCO/North High School - $500 to plan and $5,000 to support a summer youth training institute that will create a North Denver Youth Council made up of youth leaders from public and private middle and high schools

Bienvenidos Food Bank Promoters Project – $495 to plan an outreach/information project to low-income residents in Highland and Sunnyside

Graffiti Art Appreciation Project - $200 to plan graffiti art appreciation classes

Seniors of Highland & Sunnyside - $500 to plan a series of computer workshops and movement classes for seniors

NW Coalition 4 Better Schools - $3,400 to support the Ellen Torres Awards Breakfast designed to recognize outstanding academic success stories in neighborhood schools

North High School - $5,000 to support the two-year “NET” Xeriscape Community Garden Project

NW Denver Community Resource Festival – $2,500 to support a fun and informational resource festival for local residents and families

Bryant Webster Elementary School - $1,000 to support the annual Literacy Nights – activities designed by teachers and parents to emphasize the importance of reading

Circle of Light Rally - $495 to support a community gathering on the 9/11 anniversary

Academia Ana Maria Sandoval - $2,490 to support the school’s 1st Anniversary celebration

SUNI Safe Streets NOW! Project - $3,000 to train residents to solve neighborhood “problem property” cases internally
