Your Fire Prevention Checklist

Nov 25, 2001

More people die in fires than in hurricanes, floods and all other natural disasters combined.
Keep this checklist hand at work and home to help prevent fire and fatalities.

Work:
?? I know and have practiced the fire evacuation plan at my workplace.
?? I know where all exits and fire extinguishers are located.
?? There are no stacks of old papers, flammable items or rags located near portable space heater
or radiators.
?? There are no overloaded or frayed electrical cords.
?? Chemicals, specifically flammable and combustible liquids, are stored in appropriate places.
?? I know whom to contact at my workplace to report any fire hazard concerns.

Home:
?? There is a smoke detector on every level of our home, and we change the batteries at least twice
a year.
?? We extinguish candles, smoking materials and fires before leaving a room or going to sleep.
?? We never smoke in bed.
?? Our family has set up and practiced a fire evacuation plan.
?? Matches, lighters and candles are kept away from children. Note: Every year children start over 100,000 fires.
?? We clean our chimney once a year.
?? Our basement, garage and storage areas are free from combustible rubbish, oily rags, old paper
and broken furniture.
?? Curtains, furniture and flammable items are kept away from stoves, fireplaces and portable
heaters.
