English Learning

Many students from abroad struggle to learn English in ''English-as-a-Second-Language'' (ESL) classes. For some, this may be the only place they MUST use English. For most, English is NOT their second language. It is in fact their third, fourth, fifth or more language.

The English Learners Association (ELA) seeks alternative ways for English learners of all ages to get practical English lessons to supplement their formal ESL classes. Many of these alternative methods come through our affiliation with Earth Systems Science, Inc. (ESSI), a community-based educational non-profit.

Cultural Learning

Language learning is interwoven with cultural learning. Los Angeles is a cosmopolitan mixing bowl of many cultures. English becomes the common language for these different students. This diversity provides a basis for any English learner to use English to tell others about their own culture, and to ask about other cultures.

ELA seeks to provide a way for English learners to meet (e.g. face to face or by the internet via this website). Practice English by using English outside the classroom. The Discussion section and Live Chat functions of the ELA website are available 24/7. So even students who are working, who don't have a car, or who are short of time can have a chance to practice. And all of this is FREE of charge!

Seeing California

Many students from abroad don't get out to see California. There are many reasons for this. But ELA seeks to create low-cost group activities to give English learners the opportunity to see and talk about California's diverse natural scenery, unique plants and animals, and diverse native cultures.

Don't let a language barrier stop you from learning more about California and America. ELA can be a way to meet and make new friends. ELA can help broaden your horizons to a fuller and more enjoyable life.
